Sufjan Stevens – Niagara Falls Lyrics

This song is sweet, it makes me think of a child remembering a family vacation, especially "we pretend we are from Africa" because it sounds like a game children would play on a car trip. |

Wow, nobody's commented?
This song is really soft and quiet. Yes, somewhat repetitive, but it has this sort of loving and safe feeling to it. |

I think it's "You are the heart dotting I in the word apologize"
That's how i've always thought of it...
and I would agree it's "I am the heart with no name
airbrushed on the license plate" |

It must be about masturbation...
It definitely does make you want to dance though! |

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics
| 18 years ago

When analyzing this song, the first thing you have to look at is Sufjan's christianity which is prominent in many of his songs. This song in particular shows Sufjan's empathy. He can put himself in the place of even a horrific murderer like Gacy, and relate himself to Gacy. No, Sufjan probably isn't as evil of a person as Gacy was, but he can look into the life of Gacy and his childhood connect it to the murders he committed in adulthood. I find it really interesting that he shows empathy not only to the serial killer, but his victims. These lines really bring life to the boys: "Twenty-seven people
Even more, they were boys
With their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God"
I really don't think that Sufjan is being obnoxiously Christian at all in this song.
Oh, and I love the first "oh my god", it adds a sort of creepy, chilling feeling to this song, and adding a more personal feeling as well. |

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Lyrics

I don't love the melody like i do in many other songs. The instrumental part just seems to drag on without really acheiving much. But this definitely gets better when the singing starts. I've always thought the "you" was the sister. He wants to put her in the kite and show her the sky, which could mean he wants to show her everything he's seen in the world. |

Sufjan Stevens – The Friendly Beasts Lyrics

This song is interesting because it looks at the birth of Jesus from the points of view of all of the farm animals there at the time. I love how each animal's verse is sung by different singer. |

Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics

Yeah, this song is definitely about having an absent mother who seems to not care about her children. He and his siblings loved her so much, and felt almost unworthy of her presence, thus he is ashamed to even talk to her on the phone. When her car breaks down they get to see her and they play with her hair. Their grandpa raises them because their mother moves away. The grandpa buys them a vcr as a sort of distraction, and replacement for their absent mother. The next time they see her is when their grandpa dies. Then, they are old enough to see that their mother really wasnt as good of a person as they had thought she was. She sits and smokes in her room, and doesnt seem to care that their grandpa just died. She colored her hair, possibly a metaphor for the fact that she changed who she was, or who the children thought she was. The children end up being ashamed of her because they realize that she wasn't as good of a person as they thought she was.
I also find it interesting how this relates to the line in "The Seer's Tower''
"Oh my mother, she betrayed us, but our father loved and bathed us."
Sufjan seems to be making a special point of absent mothers, possibly relating to an experience of someone he knows...
Sorry about how long this turned out... |

Yeah, I would agree with that. I'd say she's saying that you're never warned against self destructiveness and also how people can become obsessed with control and let it take over their lives. |

The song has a sort of upbeat rythm, and i like the message of it, it's simple, but it says a lot.

Sufjan Stevens – The Seer's Tower Lyrics

I would say this song is definitely apocalyptical.
Emmanuel was sent to help the Isrealites repent for their sins and return to God.
"He comes dividing man from brothers" probably meaning at judgement day, when God divides the righteous from the evil, and evil dies forever. Brothers would maybe mean brothers to Jesus, i.e. friends/supporters. "I see the fire, I see the end" i'm guessing would refer to something in the book of revelation.
I couldn't begin to guess about the relevance of "Oh my mother, she betrayed us, but my father loved and bathed us." But it is a really powerful line.
I love the last two lines, they just sound sort of sad and wistful. |

They did a nice job with this song. It's a modern update, but they still kept the original tune, soft vocals, and even some sleigh bells in the background. |

I love Hellogoodbye,I never thought I liked electro-pop until i heard this song.
I think it's about long distance relationship with a girl he's crazy about, and she lives in a different state, "States that keep us far apart turn down the beating of my heart,"
This song is so happy though. |

Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics

I truly dislike this song, and it's not simply because i'm a republican, bush supporter or catholic. It's just not well-written or put-together, and it's based on very opinion-oriented lyrics, I can't pinpoint exactly why, but the quality just doesnt compare to most of Oberst's songs |

Definitely a fabulous song, when i first heard it i liked the fast pace, but when i read the lyrics i started to love it..."why try to fight what is now so certain? the truth is all that i am is a passing event that will be forgotten." It's so sad and true. |

I absolutely adore this song, the tune is extremely catchy, and just won't get out of my head. I've always seen it as really nostalgic. It's of course about drug(and alcohol) abuse as a teenager, and of having a friend die of a drug overdose,
"we hurry to our death
well i lagged behind
so you got ahead " |

Yes! MTV kids havent taken over this song yet!
It's really pretty, and has those wistful, shaky vocals from Conor that we all love so much. Now that I think about it, it could be about a friend's suicide, concidering the last lines. |

Sufjan Stevens – We Are What You Say Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
Wow, nobody's commented on this!
First of all, I love the celtic and middle eastern influences.
Sufjan seems to be denouncing the bishop by saying he's easy and wrong, and that The Spirit is right and will say.
I'm guessing he means that the Holy Spirit has more religious authority than the easily-swayed bishop, and will truly decide people's fates in the end. The Servant line could refer to being a servant to God. Okay, that's about all I can think of. Anyways, I like the almost passively rebellious feeling in the "we are what you say" lines. |

Sufjan Stevens – Abraham Lyrics
|
This song is of course about the bible story where Abraham shows his obedience to God by almost sacrificing his only son Issac. The last line "until Jesus comes" refers to how Abraham started the old covenant with God, and then Jesus became the new and everlasting covenant.
The song is so peaceful and relaxing... |
