In fact I interpreted this song the opposite way from Jsimpson88. When I heard this song, it sounded like it's from the perspective of the girl he was on cheating on with- the 3rd party in the relationship. Perhaps she only just became aware that she's the 3rd party and she's now devastated to know that she's only the other girl. All she wanted was his love but look what it's done to her. And now she knows he's somewhere else and loving someone else. But he has taken her love with him wherever he is but she can't do anything abt it and it's just such a shame now. Might sound nuts but that's exactly how I interpreted the song! |

I really like AsiaHoBoom's interpretation, it makes a lot of sense. Though I've got to say, when I first saw the lyrics, I had the impression that they are singing about the certainty of death and all the possible sensations they might bring (death and all his friends). kind of like the evemts leading up to the death (wild wind / cold war / cold world), how it feels the instant before dying (oh love don't let me go, take me where the street lights still glow etc) and finally the moment of death (now my feet won't touch the ground- like a ghost maybe?). So yeah, death and all his friends. But whatever the interpretation is, it's an excellent song; my favourite in the EP. |

This song took on an interesting meaning to me over the weekend. I was in the casino and this song just started playing in my mind.. oh hmmm i have a different interpretation to this song.. i thought it was about someone who was pretty badly hurt in a relationship. now he meets this new girl, and he is afraid to fall in love again (that's why he's thinking about leaving right now cos he's scared of falling in love). but despite all his efforts not to fall in love, he can't stop himself from seeing her, and he finally does surrender himself to this love. this is the only will young song i've ever heard! |

Awesome song! I think of it as 2 people who are unsure of what they want - most probably the relationship between them (doesn't have to be romantic). Things will change soon cos they will both be embarking on new challenges but for now, they will be contented to just stay where they are, maybe because the future is too uncertain (coins rattling in a coffee can, hotels being burned down). Just my take though! |

Wow I didn't know she wrote this for her husband.. It's definitely a very good song. Actually when I first heard this song, the feeling I had was kinda like she was singing about a future perfect love. It's like singing about someone who is lonely in a way and is dreaming about meeting the guy who she can love sometime in the future. And I can relate to that actually. But now that I know she wrote this for her husband, yeah it makes perfect sense, I wonder why I didn't think about that in the first place. |

This is just such a nice, nice song. It's so sad and it feels so... real. It feels as if you can actually hear Corrinne having a conversation with the child, and it's so clever that the chorus has 2 meanings - one where the child reassures the mum and one where the mum bids goodbye to the child.. I love this song. Great stuff. |

I think the reference to India might just be a reference to somewhere where you can get lost easily without a map to guide u home literally.. What's starting over from scratch? I didn't quite get what's starting over from scratch initially too, until she sang the line "and all this time, I thought that we were friends/my stubborn will is learning to bend".. I think that it means she realises that she's falling for a friend, that all this time, she thought they were friends but now she truly realises that she might be falling for him and hence is asking if things between them can start from scratch again - as lovers this time. That's just my thoughts though.. might be totally wrong lol. |

hmmm thanks, gabigs, for that insight! well, i've been listening to this song for YEARS but i've never thought to comment on it. until this song was played on my player on shuffle. and ohmy did it hit me hard.. i found another way of intepreting it.. not so much as a stranger in a new place but someone who is already familiar with a place but yet finds him/herself feeling alienated all of a sudden because of the lines "In Santa Monica, in the wintertime, the lazy streets so undemanding, I walk into the crowd". it gives off a feeling wherethe person is already familiar with Santa Monica, no? just walking into the crowd like any other day. oh well, just my 2cents worth. in a way i am so familiar with my environment having lived here for 20 years but sometimes, i do sit and wonder what am i still doing here and why havent i changed.. |

this song is way awesome.. i especially like the first 4 lines.. "I swapped my innocence for pride crushed the end within my stride said "I'm strong now I know that I'm a leaver" I love the sound of you walking away" an all-too-familiar feeling.. and the way he sang "the sound of you walking away", from nonchalent-sounding the during the first stanza to almost with a tinge of sadness towards the end.. just great. |
