Taking Back Sunday – Spin Lyrics 17 years ago
i.e., in addition to the aforementioned songs,

-The Union (definitely about the breakup and the subsequent reforming, if you want my opinion)
-Decade Under The Influence (We used to be this dying breed line speculated to be a reference to a BN song).
-Existentialism on Prom Night
etc.

Like I said, it all depends on how you interpret the songs. I haven't heard any definite confirmations from the band of the songs' subject matter, but some are pretty obvious. ...Slowdance on the Inside, for instance, blatantly rips the opening guitar and first two lines of Soco Amaretto Lime.

Your Name Here was written about Jesse Lacey, not TBS.

Pretty much all of Where You Want To Be and SR's first album have been speculated to be about the other band.

Owen Pallett – Many Lives -> 49 MP Lyrics 17 years ago
Sorry I'm a little late on explaining...

He Poos Clouds is a concept album based on the eight schools of magic in Dungeons and Dragons (I don't remember all their names, you can find them elsewhere... probably wikipedia), plus two songs (--> and The Pooka Sings) to round out the album. Owen frequently introduces this song when he plays live as "School of magic number 5: divination."

Fall Out Boy – This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is, yes, an attack on the 'scene' that FOB has become a part of (if you can call it that). These themes have been showing up since their FUCT days.

However, this song is also a DIRECT RESPONSE to Taking Back Sunday's "Spin," which was a song mocking FOB's rise to fame. Adam writes in Spin, referring to fame in the music industry, "I heard that this is where, where the party is..." and Pete responds with, "Crashing not like hips and cars but more like parties." It's pretty clear.

However, FOB also makes it clear they don't care who wins or loses in this "feud." But Pete definitely wanted to have the last word.

I think there is very little on this album that sounds like Radiohead, and I don't why people keep making that comparison.

THIS song, however, sounds almost exactly like "Exit Music (For A Film)."

Senses Fail – The Irony Of Dying on your Birthday Lyrics 17 years ago
The whole thing about "colors blind the eyes" etc. comes from Buddy's interest in spirituality, and it's also where Senses Fail's name comes from. I'm not exactly sure where it comes from (what religion/philosophy), but supposedly, when you go on a journey to find yourself ("follow your bliss") all your senses will fail you. And that's supposed to be true nirvana. Or something.

That's not word for word, and I probably butchered the explanation, but yeah. You get the picture.

Senses Fail – The Priest And The Matador Lyrics 17 years ago
Based on the songs we've seen so far, the B-side "Stretch Your Legs To Coffin Length," and the title of the album, the theme seems to be finding something to believe in (or not).

The B-side and this song make me think that especially, what with the religious themes.

Senses Fail – Calling All Cars Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with most of what you said, Johnny, but I don't like this whole "way less screaming" argument a lot of people are using. Let It Enfold you had plenty of songs with very little screaming, so I don't think it's fair to say "way less." Irony of Dying On Your Birthday and You're Cute When You Scream were the two that had the most substantial screaming, but songs like Buried A Lie and NJ Falls Into the Atlantic were just as poppy and just as screamless as this. And Shark Attack, which I think sounds amazing, clearly has the screaming a lot of fans are asking for. Calling All Cars was just the one they had readymade for a single. I don't have any problem with people disliking this song (I personally am not that big a fan), but I think it's silly to dismiss it because of the lack of screaming.

^I was thinking the same thing. Something along the lines of "Alkaline Trio already did this, but better."

But no, this isn't a half-bad song. It's just obviously the one they tailored to be the single. I don't understand all these people on their MySpace saying how different it sounds, though. Granted, the guitar work has improved and Buddy's voice is more polished, but to me this just sounds like another "Buried A Lie." Even the melody is similar at certain parts in this song. So I'm really confused by those fans who say SF is taking "a completely new direction."

Senses Fail – The Priest And The Matador Lyrics 17 years ago
I kind of think it's a commentary on religion.

He says "get the fuck away" to the man (presumably the priest) who tries to pray for him. The "straight to hell" part and the reference to Satanism ("cross turned upside down") make me think that as well.

But the entire second verse pretty much says it blatantly ("My faith is weak" etc.). So yeah.

Trick Daddy – Sugar (Gimme Sone) (feat. Cee-Lo & Ludacris) Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm surprised no one has ever pointed out that the chorus to this song is actually lifted from the Talking Heads song "Sugar On My Tongue." I wouldn't be surprised if Cee-Lo was a fan of theirs. But yeah, obviously a nod to David Byrne's lyrics.

Fergie – London Bridge Lyrics 17 years ago
"London Bridge" is clearly an anti-war song and a deliberate criticism of the current administration's foreign policy. However, it also attacks those politicians who say they are opposed to the war for not doing more about it, or for voting for it in the first place.

In the first verse, Fergie uses herself in the club as a metaphor for how the United States has gone about building a democracy in Iraq. Much like Fergie describes herself, America has inaccurate and borderline racist impressions of people from other countries ("Me love you long time"); the US also seems to think it is better than every other country ("When I come to the club, step aside.")

The US's intentions are revealed towards the end of the verse, where Fergie proclaims that she "don't give a fuck," which is how she seems to say the administration feels about the lives lost.

The chorus shifts from a metaphor to Fergie's point of view of the situation. A "London bridge" is reference to Fergie's previously high opinion of the United States, which is now "going down" everytime she hears more bad news from the forefront.

Later, Fergie calls the President out directly, saying "get up out of my face ... 'fore I spray your ass with mace." Such a painful and intelligently worded argument in such a popular song could affect the president in the polls. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.

Kudos to Fergie for improving her song writing skills since "My Humps," which addressed the origins of existentialism and realism rather poorly.

Cursive – Big Bang Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is pretty blatant.

Which is why I'm fuming at the review written by Rolling Stone about this album. The reviewer obviously didn't listen to the album at all, or didn't pay attention when he did. He makes some remark about "Big Bang" being about a girl. Is there any line in here that would suggest that? It pisses me off when people think that when a band is normally classified as "emo" (whatever the hell that means anymore) or associated with Bright Eyes, then obviously the only thing they write about is lost love. What a douchebag.

Great song.

Rediscover – Shake It Lyrics 18 years ago
I have to disagree pinkie: the protagonist doesn't love the girl at all. Like most of Rediscovers songs, it seems this one is also about using a girl for physical gratification.

He doesn't want to chase after her or call her (hence "the phone tag you know I hate"), he just wants sex. He says "Just tell me to say I like you, I'll say it anyway," which suggests he doesn't actually like her, but he'll tell her that anyways. Same goes for the "I'll fake it" lines. His true intentions show the most in the bridge: "Well darling don't be scared when I touch you there."

Clearly a song about using a girl.

Cobra Starship – Bring It (Snakes on a Plane) Lyrics 18 years ago
For those of you saying how stupid Snakes On A Plane looks: congratulations, you figured it out. That's the point.

This song was everything it needed to be. Catchy and pumped full of just the right amount of cheese to be the single for this soundtrack. However, I could probably strangle Pete Wentz for the opportunity he wasted. It would be one thing if he got all his buddies on a soundtrack and had them write new songs for it. But no, we get a bunch of mediocre remixes. The only other Snakes related song on the soundtrack is by Cee-Lo (and that made the disc worth buying) and Gym Class Heroes and The Bronx, along with select others have good tracks. But come on. Give us at least some unreleased b-sides, not a truckload of crappy remixes. I'm not sure what Fall Out Boy's obsession with dance versions of pop-punk-emo songs is, but I hope it ends very soon.

Blink-182 – Not Now Lyrics 18 years ago
^I agree asdfg, AVA was a major disappointment. Not all that bad live, though, but still... eh.

The song itself is about death. Period. Tom said it himself. The video has, however, created a new interpretation and meaning for fans of the band, but that doesn't change the original intention of this song. However, "I Feel So..." is without a doubt about Tom being disappointed with his early work in blink and wishing he could start over. Which he then did not too long after...

I think this song didn't make it to the new album because it's so similar in subject matter to "Letters To God," Tom's other song about death. They're both great songs, and exceedingly different stylistically.

And I concur with whomever said the main progression of this is exactly like Alkaline Trio's "For Your Lungs Only." The guitar in "Cat Like Theif" is also identical to the bass in the Trio's "You've Got So Far To Go." Tom apparently likes them a lot. With good reason.

The Sleeping – Better Than Anything Else Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about death, and the album itself seems to have a lot of songs about death in general. The album is dedicated to the memory of John Beatz (definitely the subject of "Heart Beatz") and Caitlin Boyle, whom I can only assume is a personal friend of the band's and also the subject of this song.

"The ones that we need are the ones that we're losing" is easily a reference to friends who are dying.

The Sleeping – Still Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, the recurring theme on Questions and Answers seems to be death, so I would assume this is referring to someone who died whom he "can still feel," even though they're gone. It's simple, and that's all it needs to be.

The Hush Sound – Carry Me Home Lyrics 18 years ago
Easily the best song on So Sudden.

I think it's about depression: he doesn't dream anymore, he can't seem to succeed in anything he tried to do ("I'd always lose"), the therapist is no help and just gives him more pills. He's being drowned by a tide of pessimists, etc.

And then in the third verse, he actuall dream, though he previously stated he couldn't, and he dreams that he feels like he fits in.

Saying "Carry me home" is just asking to find a place where he feels like he belongs.

Taking Back Sunday – The Union Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always considered this song to be about Shaun and John, but poetictragedy5, you added a whole new dimension to it, and I love it. Kudos.

As to "still, small center," it means he's waiting for a balanced moment of calm, rather than the whole storm of drama surrounding the band's breakup (similarily, he "hoped to avoid the issues").

Another interesting note: some lyrics that appear in the insert but not in the song are, "All of this while you were out and about, telling them all how I wanted it to be like this." That's likely a reference to John/Shaun blaming the breakup on Adam and such.

This song is definitely one of the best on WYWTB.

Bayside – They Looked Like Strong Hands Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe on the "Making of Bayside" DVD that came with Silverstein's most recent album, John states that he thinks this will become a fan favorite, and thus become one of his favorites as well. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure.

But I just thought that was a worthwhile thing to mention, sad though it may be.

Bayside – Masterpiece Lyrics 18 years ago
Vdl, I agree, I think it's the narrator speaking to himself-- but Andrew, the old bass player, wrote this song, not Anthony. He wrote all the lyrics on "Sirens and Condolences," and I believe on the Name Taken split as well.

However, on the enhanced movie on "Sirens" where Andrew talks about each of the songs, he says the words were written in two halves, but it worked out because "they were both about the same person." That kind of suggests it's not himself... but that's kind of vague, and nothing he says in the video completely nullifies the possibility that it is an introspective song. So I retain my original statement.

Bayside – Megan Lyrics 18 years ago

Taking Back Sunday – I'll Let You Live Lyrics 18 years ago
To add to my previous comment, the title's significance is Adam's way of saying, "This time around, I'm not going to waste time insulting you through song." And that's another way of "gutting" John out, because John wrote the first TBS "diss" song in the first place.

Straylight Run – I Don't Want This Anymore Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it just has to do with people's tastes. A lot of people began listening to Straylight Run for John: his voice and his writing. And generally, Straylight Run is a band where the lyrics are a main focal point. Hence, a lyrically sparse song featuring mostly Michelle is disappointing to some. Understandable, but I think this song is really amazing. It's not something I put on every day, but every time I happen to come across it in iTunes on shuffle, I'm always impressed. It's very atmospheric and original sounding. And the door squeaking or whatever it is at the end is very nice.

Anywho, anyone think this could be continuing the main theme on Prepare To Be Wrong? The war, I mean. Sure, this song is vague enough it could be about anything, but it seems to fit that way. And the haunting, simplistic sound may just be to get that message across. Ya know, Use this song as an intro or companion to Later That Year and Big Shot.

Straylight Run – Sympathy For The Martyr Lyrics 18 years ago
So to upset the people that hate it when connections are made between Straylight Run/Taking Back Sunday songs even more:

"So please, please, I'm running out of sympathy"-"A desperate plea for sympathy."

I mean, you can just hear the desperation in Adam's voice in "Great Romances" so I think that's a likely connection. If not, I still say this song is about Adam. No, I'm not one of those people who thinks every Straylight song is about TBS and vice versa, but I do think this one and "Another Word For Desperate" are. I think TBS wrote far more songs about the split than Straylight Run did.

Regardless, this song is easily related to, and has a universal meaning to it, as well as John's personal intentions. That's the beauty of the SR/TBS diss songs: how subtle they are. Well, not "There's No 'I' In Team," but even that has a universal theme.

Also, to add to thechemicalkidd's statement: this song is not literally about martyrs. It's more a tongue in cheek thing... ya know, sarcasm, people. The subject of the song thinks there's "a war and it's always everybody versus" him. So it's saying he plays the victim... but he thinks of himself as a 'martyr.'

submissions
Bayside – Half A Life Lyrics 18 years ago
Anyone think this sounds like it could be about Andrew (or possibly Jim, though Andrew is a more likely candidate since he contributed far more to the band)?

"You're all show and it's getting old
As for the rest of us,
we'll do fine with what we have,
making the best of what is left."

That part especially makes me think "the rest of us" is the guys left in the band after he left. And the part's about things how bad his life is, etc. Because Anthony made a point to say this album was more hopeful than the last one (and who wrote the last one? Andrew!) But probably not, because I wasn't aware of overwhelmingly hard feelings like in this song when those guys left, so i don't know.
