Skinny Puppy – Harsh Stone White Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, you're right.. dunno why I wrote "heroin"... |
Lou Reed – Satellite Of Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
@fuckedupdog: The DVD of the documentary is called "Classic Albums - Lou Reed: Transformer (2001)". I bought it last summer, check out amazon or your local DVD shop :) |
Ministry – The Fall Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is one of my favorite Minstry songs, the live version(s) are really good to. I think it's some kind of dystopic view on the (western) world. When I listen to this song I get this apocalyptic feeling I do with some songs. The power has shifted from the will of the people to the will of money and power (Everything is useless/Nothing works at all/Nothing ever matters), we're flooded with information so we won't be able pick up on the important bits, we're selfish (Where's my compensation?) and don't really care what happens to (most) other people (Watching others fall). My 2 cents |
Placebo – Song To Say Goodbye Lyrics | 18 years ago |
When I hear this song and listen to the lyrics I can't help but feel that this is somewhat connected (at least theme/lyrically) to 'Commercial for Levi'. The way I interpret the song is that it generally is about someone who takes to much drugs and the person in the song doesn't really like them anymore, but feels obligated somehow to help this person. This obligation may be commected with the 'You were Mother Nature's son. Someone to whom I could relate.'-part of the lyrics. They were friends but their friendship deteriorated, perhaps because of drugs. I think Brian included the Neil Young phrase to reveal that it really is about drugs and how it fucks a lot of things up. My 10 cents... |
Bloodhound Gang – Something Diabolical Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Anti-Hero: If you listen to a song like 'In the End' by LP, you hear the same kind of vocals. If you wear headphones or something you hear the vocals shifting from left to right, just like in this song. And J. Pop is definitly trying to do the same vocal style. The chorus in this BHG song is like most LP-songs I've heard.. (I'm not a fan of LP, but I've heard some songs. If I'm wrong I hope someone with better knowledge of them try to compare LP-songs with this one) |
Depeche Mode – Lilian Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me this is the greatest song on Playing the Angel. Love the beat and feel :) |
Manic Street Preachers – P.C.P. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The qoute you're referring to is actually : '227 Lears and I can't remember the first line...' Can't give you a good explanation, though |
Covenant – Bullet Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me the first line seems to tell it all. 'time is like a bullet from behind'. Time will catch up with you, whether you want it or not. You will die eventually and you should live in the moment because you won't know when your time will come.. The song is cool, but when I 'analyzed' it now it seems more optimistic than it sounds.. dunno |
Bloodhound Gang – Something Diabolical Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This has to be a take at Linkin Park... |
16 Horsepower – Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater Revival cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a great cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Bad Moon Rising', which is one of the few CCR songs I don't like. This cover takes the song to a whole new level |
Revolting Cocks – Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yeah, this is a Rod Stewart cover. He apparently liked it ;) I love Connellys volcals on this one, really non-chalant. Great cover and I'm really looking forward to the new album, supposedly to be released in 2006 |
Skinny Puppy – Harsh Stone White Lyrics | 18 years ago |
definetly about heroin... |
Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I was listening to the cd while riding the subway and when the 'audience' comes out from the background i got goosebumps. It really freaked me out.. |
System of a Down – Revenga Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The guitar solo you guys are referring to is actually taken from the norwegian black metal band Emperor. It's the theme from "I am the Black Wizards" (no, that's not a typo!) which is from their 1994 album "In the Nightside Eclipse". I was kinda surprised to hear it in a SOAD song, but not surprised most people didn't recognize it/know it's origin. |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Sorrowful Wife Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is really good. Love how it goes from calm to aggressive and the lyrics are great too. "I married my wife on the day of the eclipse Our friends awarded her courage with gifts" - There was no possibilities for this relationship to work out. I find this part of the lyric sad, but also kinda funny ;) |
Nick Drake – The Thoughts of Mary Jane Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I wholeheartedly agree with you Bladet. Personally I've always thought the song was about the things you think of and how you see the world while high (thus the title 'thoughts of mary jane') |
The Cure – A Strange Day Lyrics | 19 years ago |
'Held for one moment I remember a song' is really beautifully put. I hope that's what happens right before i die :) |
Nine Inch Nails – The Persistence of Loss Lyrics | 19 years ago |
second that.. |
Nine Inch Nails – The Day the World Went Away Lyrics | 19 years ago |
@pinion7 : whoa, you read my mind... |
Nine Inch Nails – Burn Lyrics | 19 years ago |
First of all I have to say that the drums on this one seriously kicks ass. To me the thing that awakens inside of him is some kind of extreme hate/disgust with the world after being pushed around and not fitting in all your life |
Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Dunno why, but this song gives me a nice punkpop vibe :) |
Morrissey – The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree that this song is a swing at modern, manufactured popstars and authorities. Whereas some pop music can qualify as intelligent, most popular, radiofriendly music is not - at least to me. |
Lou Reed – Satellite Of Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I saw it on TV a couple of years ago, I'll bet it's still being sold/broadcasted somewhere.. Can't remember the name of it though.. :( |
Neil Young – Harvest Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I spent all summer listening and singing this song, it's so beautifully sad. I'm not too sure what it's about, and I'm not sure I wanna know (for once) - it means a lot to me anyway |
Bauhaus – In The Flat Field Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree with xtiandeth, this is a song about living in a boring place (who hasn't?) and wanting to do _everything_ to get away - the last verse clearly states this IMHO |
Black Flag – Rise Above Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song, like a lot of BF songs, is a fucking kick in the teeth.. i love it |
The Cure – All I Have to Do Is Kill Her Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's on the 'M'-bootleg (from June 7 1982) and also on the 'Alternative Medicine'-bootleg (live from Paris L'Olympia, 1982 (the Pornography tour)) |
Seigmen – Trampoline Lyrics | 19 years ago |
To me this is the song on Radiowaves that's 'truest' to the old Seigmen-atmosphere. It's definitively the darkest song on the album. |
Zeromancer – Opelwerk Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's the single, greatest Zeromancer song ever created - of course it's an old Seigmen track ;) |
Motörhead – God Save the Queen (Sex Pistols cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Nice cover |
Johnny Thunders – You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I probably should say "I can't believe anybody hasn't commented on this song..." and so on. Anyway, this song is about drug use and abuse and how no-one wants to have anything to do with you when they realize you're a junkie and how you can never comfort yourself with memories of happier times. |
Manic Street Preachers – Die In The Summertime Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song i clearly about self-mutilation ("Scratch my leg with a rusty nail"), boredom ("Whole days throwing sticks into streams") and suicidal wishes (quite clearly). I love this song and to me the lines "I have crawled so far sideways I recognise dim traces of creation" have to do with Richeys conviction that whatever you do (and like to do), it will be bored down and become a routine (a vicious circle no-one can escape from). |
The Cure – The Figurehead Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is about a deep depression and a man on the verge of suicide... "Sharp and open Leave me alone And sleeping less every night" -- Depressed people have trouble sleeping and feelings of needing to be alone. He also feels like he’s been cut open. "As the days become heavier and weighted Waiting In the cold light" -- Things are getting darker by the day and he's feeling cold inside and/or the world has a bleak glow (everything is grey, film noir-ish) as he's hoping for things to change. "A noise A scream tears my clothes as the figurines tighten With spiders inside them And dust on the lips of a vision of hell" -- He's getting more and more depressed and doesn't feel comfortable in his old skin and surroundings, he’s getting paranoid and scared and he feels it’s all pushing him in the wrong direction (Hell). "I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year" -- To me this is a sign of panic when realizing you're probably not gonna make it. "A hundred other words blind me with your purity Like an old painted doll in the throes of dance" -- He's thinking back to (probably) her kind words that used to cheer him up, and now the words or this happiness just scaling off like paint on and old wall (or an old doll). "I think about tomorrow Please let me sleep" -- He's thinking about his insomnia again and hoping he’ll get some sleep tonight so he'll get through the next day (and maybe even feel a little better). "As I slip down the window" -- He's hoping to float away and maybe someone will notice (tied to the imagined suicide/funeral further down). "Freshly squashed fly You mean nothing You mean nothing" -- He's either talking about the girl who left him, wanting her to be crushed like he is (like a bug) and mean nothing to him (or anybody, also like him), or realizing that he means nothing to anybody (or this girl in particular) and that he's like a squashed bug that gets thrown in the trash without the person killing/throwing them caring. "I can lose myself in Chinese art and American girls" -- He's thinking that maybe he could dedicate his time on other things to get out of his depression or getting over this girl... "All the time Lose me in the dark" -- ..but he knows that in the end he'll still not feel better and still miss her. "Please do it right Run into the night I will lose myself tomorrow Crimson pain" -- He's contemplating suicide and building up his courage to do it. "Crimson pain" is possibly tied to the suicide depicted in 'Pornography': "I'll watch you drown in the shower", slitting his wrists and watching the blood flow into the drain. "My heart explodes My memory in a fire” -- He’s thinking about how he hope to feel when he goes through with the suicide… hoping that he’s life will flash before his eyes (memory in a fire) and that he’s probably best off dying. “And someone will listen At least for a short while..." -- This is him thinking about his funeral. He's wondering who'll be there and that, at least for a moment, someone will think about him and (maybe) how they treated him. He could possibly also be talking about wanting commit a “cry-for-help”-suicide, wanting to be found, so that someone will listen to him and hopefully ease his pain. "I can never say no to anyone but you" -- This one is a bit tricky to fit into my interpretation. When I started listening to the song I thought this part was him thinking this about his lover - how he really wants her, but still, ironically, turns her down and treats her badly. It can, however, also fit with the depression/suicide theme in that he's actually telling himself to do it already and that he'll know it's for the best when he's gone. "Too many secrets Too many lies Writhing with hatred Too many secrets Please make it good tonight..." -- He's thinking about all the secrets and lies in this relationship, and how he wrote/said things he didn't mean (maybe even as poetry/lyrics if you want this to be a bit Smith-autobiographical). He wants it all undone, but... "But the same image haunts me In sequence In despair of time" -- ...yet again he knows that with time he'll always come back to missing her and feeling this bad. A vicious circle, so to speak, he’ll always return to his personal purgatory or destiny. "I will never be clean again" -- He's thinking how the scars on his wrists will be visible forever if he doesn't make it. "I touched her eyes" -- She fancied him because he was good looking, and she fell for him. (Maybe a synonym for the "shining eyes"-thing from "There Is No If..."?). "Pressed my stained face" -- He's thinking about how he wasn't good enough for her or how he stained her just by being around. Probably connected with her "purity" (before they met) mentioned earlier. "I will never be clean again" -- This could, in addition to the scars, be about how he will never feel better again after HE (yes, he) was stained by her when she left him (she returned the favor). This is also IMHO connected to "Lovesong" with the line "You make me feel like I am clean again" and, as someone else mentioned under "Lovesong", this is clearly an intentional reference (in "Lovesong", that is). |
Mew – Comforting Sounds Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's probably just me again, but this seems to be about drugs and long-time friends. I interpret this song something along these lines : " I don't feel alright in spite of these comforting sounds you make. I don't feel alright because you make promises that you break." -- The friend tries to assure the narrator (I) that he's got no problems with drugs and the I can't trust him because he's broke promises before. "Into your house, why don't we share our solitude? Nothing is pure anymore but solitude." -- Drugabuse comes from or often drives people into solitude for various reasons. The I person wants to help him with his addiction and he wants him to be honest ("nothing is pure anymore than solitude"). "It's hard to make sense, feels as if I'm sensing you through a lens. If someone else comes, I'd just sit here listening to the drums." -- The narrator doesn't recognize his friend, he seems to be staring at him from far away. He's allso saying or thinking that if anybody interrupts this conversation he will just pretend to be bored or interested in something else (the drums in the song playing in the background maybe?) "Previously I never called it solitude. And probably you know all the dirty shows I've put on. Blunted and exhausted like anyone. Honestly I tried to avoid it. Honestly." -- This, to me, seems to be the narrators own confession about his previouse drug (ab)use and all the lies/shows he's put on to hide this (ab)use or how he used to be the center of attention while high. I couldn't find the definition for 'blunted', so I'll interpret it as a verb for "hitting a blunt" (probably incorrect as hell..). So, he's actually saying he did it years ago and that he either had to go to rehab or that he had to quit (the 'exhausted like anyone' part). He honestly tried to avoid getting into rehab/quitting or how he wished to avoid making a shit out of himself while high. "Back when we were kids, we would always know when to stop. And now all the good kids are messing up. Nobody has gained or accomplished anything." -- He's remembering how when they both were young they would do drugs together, but allways just doing it for fun and knew when to stop. He's allso saying they were good kids who got messed up and that none of them have gained or accomplished anything by using drugs and/or in their general lives. Whoah.. long one.. I'm probably way off... about love anyone? |
Mew – She Came Home For Christmas Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'll go with *ia* on this one! nice interpretation! |
The Cure – There Is No If... Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is about a guy who is in love (his eyes are shining) with his girlfriend. The second part is about him still loving her but she is in love with somebody else (her eyes are shinging, but not towards him) |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Bye June Lyrics | 19 years ago |
To me this song is a kind of suicide note to a former lover. "I hope you make it soon" symbolises that they'll be together again in death. "I'm wishing you're there too" gives me Romeo & Juliet-vibes - what he really wanted was for her to die with him (or probably right before he leaves this world). |
The Smashing Pumpkins – The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song rocks. It blew my mind when I first heard it. To me the corus is beautifully sad |
Radiohead – Big Ideas (Don't Get Any) (A.K.A. Nude) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is the most beautiful song from Radiohead. I like the keyboard/drums/guitar version the best |
Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I like the "original" better, before they remixed it for Kid A. I'd advice everybody to download it off some old bootleg and listen to it :) |
Ministry – Just One Fix Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'd have to agree with you Alieno, to me it's always sounded like "Driving through the highway at night". I haven't listened to every remix available, so I can't be sure, but I'm pretty sure you're right. |
The Cure – Plainsong Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song, like One Hundred Years on Pornography, sets the entire mood of the album. I love this song. Whenever I hear this song I think of a couple standing on a tall cliff on a cold, rainy day - a bit like Sorrywrongnumbah |
The Cure – Bloodflowers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree with what you're all saying, but it could also be a song dealing with optimists versus pessimists. I know this is only scratching the surface of the lyrics, but it's just another way of looking at them :) |
Placebo – Swallow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I seem to remember Brian saying this song can be interpreted in several ways, not only about "somebody who has misplaced their drugs and can't find them", so I guess it's whatever you put into it (but isn't most art just that?) |
The Cure – Cold Lyrics | 19 years ago |
But then again, sorrywrongnumbah, isn't that just what defines a goth band - publicly stating that they are not goth? Sisters of Mercy claim the same ;) |
The Cure – This Is a Lie Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I love both versions.. great song! |
The Cure – Treasure Lyrics | 19 years ago |
To me this song is an ex-lover wanting the other person to remember them as the opposite of what they were. The ex-lover did exactly the opposite of how he or she wants to be remembered - never true, never tried and never really loved the other person |
Motörhead – Angel City Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is great. "Drink Bon Jovi's booze for free" shows the kind of humor Lemmy and the guys have.. great stuff |
The Cure – Grinding Halt Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song rocks! |
The Cure – M Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Or maybe it's just stating that there's a difference between loving someone and falling in love with someone? |
