Antony and the Johnsons – Hope There's Someone Lyrics 16 years ago
Alot of people see this song about dear of death; I also see it as a song reflecting my dealing with mental illness. I've had schizophrenia for some time now and to me lines like "Oh I'm scared of the middle place / Between light and nowhere" also refer to my psychosis as opposed to nothingness (obviously referring to death) and life like everyone else (the 'light'). Also the man on the horizon refers to those I believe are watching me and stalking me.
All in all this is a very touching song.

Elliott Smith – Memory Lane Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is very obviously about being in an asylum.
The first few lines are saying that an asylum is a place that no one ever wants to go to, and especially in this case, it was forced incarceration, essentially. 'Basement on a hill" is that point where you still have a mental illness, and everything isn't peachy, but your are dealing with it to your standards. Nevertheless, people want to fix you because you are "not like them." And mental issues must be ruthlessly dealt with in our society. Also, the "not like them line" speaks of the stigma attached to mental illness. Other parts of the song like "the mayors name is fear," and "doctor spoke a cloud" speak of the bleak labels doctors tend to throw on you, telling you how you are so ill and must be controlled, also sing the publics fear of mentally ill people to justify things they do to them. The mountain of cliches refers not only to people's jaded and incorrect assumptions of mentally ill people, but also of the useless bromides that people and doctors tend to throw at people to try and help them, of course such cliches are useless.
For me, the most powerful line is:
"isolation pushes past self hatred, guilt and shame
to a place where suffering is just a game"
I think since mental illness is so stigmatized and misunderstood, people have a tendency to think of mental patients as somewhat less than human. Even psychiatrists do this. To the doctors, the patients aren't really people but simply cases to be studied, regardless of the patient's wishes. Similarly, the general public sees all mentally ill people as either dangerous or weird to the point of being intolerable. The intolerable ones are made fun of and become spectacles or are ignored, and sometimes worse. The ones seen as 'dangerous' (regardless or whether or not they actually are) are seen as subhuman things which need to be confined and controlled, usually by force, because the assumption is that if lest alone they will invariably hurt someone, which is simply not the case.

Air – How Does It Make You Feel? Lyrics 18 years ago
First off, that ending literally made me chuckle out loud the first time I heard it. But in a way, it has alot of meaning. Sure, the girl robot understands what the other is saying, but she still wants him around for a long time, so quite smoking, please don't get sick and die on me.
This has a lot of meaning for me. My best friend and I are always afriad of losing eachother, that we secretly will go away someday, or taht we dont care as muchas we say. We're both so afraid of losing eachother. Wo should just stop that, stop being silly. He and I will be friends forever.
I'm having a convo wiht him right now, adn I told him about this song. I hope he feels what i do. Larry, if you're out there, you're the best. I love you buddy.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – The Dead Flag Blues Lyrics 18 years ago
I lsitened to this song all the way througna couple times last night and then went to bed. I had a dream. I'm sorry to say I can't remember very many details, except that the dream was truly disturbing and that something horrible happened to someone I care very much about. First time I think I've ever woken up scared from a dream.
Amazing what music can do to you sometimes...

Anyone know if the title is a pun of any sorts on the song "Venus in Furs?"
Really the title by itself is kind of funny

Grandaddy – He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot Lyrics 18 years ago
Also, does this song remind anyone else of the Flaming Lips? Particularly the song Thirty-Five Thousand Feet of Despair.

Grandaddy – He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot Lyrics 18 years ago
This song makes me think of Sartre, and his idea that freedom is the foundation of all human thought, yet freedom itself is built upon no foundation; it's meaningless. You have to find your meaning, as futile as it is, and that's very hard and can be depressing. You have to try and 'land', or what have you, to find some ground you can stand on.

Radiohead – Nice Dream Lyrics 19 years ago
oh, and lets keep the petty arguments separated from the comments on the song, please. i find it irritating to have arguments pop up in fromt of me while id rather be concentrating on reading others' views of songs i enjoy, which is what the site is for.

Radiohead – Nice Dream Lyrics 19 years ago
The "sea would electrocute us all" line reminds me of one of my friends-suposed to be my best, not so much anymore. Every time i'd call him he'd never pick up, and he rarely returned my calls, no matter how urgent i sounded. We made plans a few times, but he had "forgotten" about them and made bigger, better plans, without me, of course. So the "sea would electrocute..." bit i think is about always having some grandiose excuse as to why you can't come help. even though, of course they'd love to come help. (nice dream)
in a nutshell, you get this glorified image of a person, you friend, and they turn out to be just as flawed a human as you are, if not more so. whats worse, any loseness you felt wasnt really there. you took the friendship for granted but it was nothing but a daydream. and they, well they took you for granted.

Wilco – Hummingbird Lyrics 19 years ago
To me this song is about someone who doesnt really want to be all that noticed, persay, or perhaps he has admitted tht he just isnt that important to people, and so he just wants to be an echo. Maybe not a memory in the foregroud, but it still reverberated in someones mind.
but he does want to be remembered, because he has someone in his life that he loved, but who never cared much for him, and he doesnt want that to happen to anyone else, least of all him, thought it already has. So thanperson just hovers in his memory, those moments where he thought he was happy, they hang there, and they echo.

The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, this song is about depression. It reminds me of two depressed people who have ot one time or another consoleed eachother. The speaker in the song is trying to tell Yoshimi, whoever that might represent, to keep fighting the depression, that she will win eventually. He's also telling her that she has helped him in the past to get through the sorrow, ("you wouldn't let those robots eat me") , and that if she can keep the "robots"/depression from destroying him, she can do the same for herself. She souldn't give up. He's saying that she has to be strong, but she can defeat the robots in the end.

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 20 years ago
Oh dear. The song is somewhat homoerotic. How terrible. Well! I know I certainly wont listen to it because I'm just that insecure and if I do then I might just turn gay. Oh wait. That's right. I already was. Hmm. Well. I guess all of my idiotic efforts to prevent my hearing this song were all for nought. (do you sense the sarchasm?)
Honestly, if you are so insecure that a song threatens your sexuality, then you really should get some help. And as a final note, I just want to add that most homophobic people are that way because they actually are gay. That's ironic.

t.A.T.u. – Stars Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that the song is not so much just about two girls, but really any two gay people, men or women, who have found that they are in love with someone else, and who fear what others will think. I always thought the song said "to BEAR the shame of this whole earth." this makes sense b/c they feel afraid and sad that everyone thinks that their love is wrong.
