Iron & Wine – Innocent Bones Lyrics 14 years ago
this song is about the sin of man. there are many biblical references in this song.

Older brother Cain (crop farmer) and Abel (shepherd) are the first and second sons of Adam and Eve. Cain is portrayed as being sinful and jealous, for committing the first murder for killing his brother after God had rejected his offerings of produce but accepted the animal sacrifice brought by Abel (the first martyr). Genesis 4

Verse 1:
"Cain got a milk-eyed mule from the auction" for the mule to help him plow the crops.
"Abel got a telephone" this one is questionable, but could insinuate that abel got a communication from God
"And even the last of the blue-eyed babies know That the burning man is the color of the end of day"
i think the color of the eyes are insignificant. meaning that at the end of days, this will effect every man on earth regardless of where they are from. that the people who are not believers in Christ and left on this earth will be scortched by fire "The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire" Revelation 16:8
"And how every tongue that gets bit always has another word to say"
there are many times in the Bible where it talks about watching what you say "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell." james 3:8

Verse 2:
"Cain bought a blade from some witch at the window" to kill abel with
"Abel bought a bag of weed"
"And even the last of the brown-eyed babies see"
"That the cartoon king has a tattoo of a bleeding heart. There aint a penthouse Christian wants the pain of the scab, but they all want the scar" how people tattoo themselves with christian symbols etc on their bodies, but they would never want or go through the pain that Christ had to go through on the cross
"How every mouth sings of what its without so we all sing of love"
And how it aint one dog whos good at fucking and denying who hes thinking of

Verse 3
"Cain heard a cat tumble limp off the rooftop" foreshadowing a brawl about to happen, like cats fighting on the roof, before he kills abel
"Abel heard his papa pray" im thinking its regarding heard God pray
"And even the last of the black-eyed babies say"
"That every saint has a chair you can borrow and a church to sell" that even though people are claimed as saints they sin as well. there are a few times Jesus got angry in the bible and it was when people would sell good inside the church/place of worship. "Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of money changers and the benches of those selling doves. It is written, he said to them, My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers Matthew 21:12-13
"That the wind blows cold across the back of the master and the kitchen help" sort of a creepy erie feeling that happens when someone is about to die.
"Theres a big pile of innocent bones still holding up the garden wall" i think this isnt referring to Christ like others interpreted, but more of Adam and Eve, and possibly Abel. Because at the garden of eden is where man was created and is where eve ate from the apple. And where the first sin happened. And innocence was lost with the first sin. and then the first murder by cain.
"And it was always the broken hand we learned to lean on after all" its easier to sin and go towards temptation, or the devil/sin "broken hand", but Christ strengthens us more then the devil ever could, if we just trust in him
"How God knows if Christ came back he would find us in a poker game" for Christ's second coming he would find all of us as sinners, gambling
"After finding out the drugs were all free but they won't let you out the door again" wont let you in the door again, cause you owe them too much money for losing the game

Iron & Wine – Sodom, South Georgia Lyrics 14 years ago
while you all try to drill your brains trying to over analyze what he is trying to say, why dont we just let sam beam explain himself what he thinks of the song. this is taken from an NPR interview:

"January 24, 2008 from KUT - Early in a solo performance by Iron and Wine frontman Sam Beam, the singer played a soft and gentle rendition of "Sodom, South Georgia," a tender piece from Our Endless Numbered Days. I had never seen it performed live, and it was such a treat – it's just too bad he couldn't remember what he was thinking when he wrote it. Host Jay Trachtenberg asked him what (if anything) the song was about, and Beam sort of laughed, intimating that he hopes people listen to his songs and apply them to their lives, whether or not what he wrote has anything to do with his own."

Feist – The Limit to Your Love Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is more about him not knowing how to truly love and care in the same way that she has the capability to. sometimes people love differently. i dont feel it is that someone is NOT in love, or not loving all the way. there is either a yes or no to love, not a partial love. him being insecure makes him afraid to show it, or he doesnt know how to show it. as much as she can to him.

Damien Rice – The Professor & La Fille Danse Lyrics 18 years ago
obviously a relationship gone wrong "cause she's only just gone..another relationship bombed by my excellent breed of gamete disease" no one has said anything relating to this, a gamete is the human germ cells, females: ovum (ovaries) and in males: sperm. a "gamete disease" of human nature for males, to spread yur gametes (sprem) leading me to believe he cheated. "here's to the man with his face in the mud" feeling down for what he has done "and an overcast play just taken away from the lover's in love at the centre of stage" was a great love like a great love story, taken away "yeah
loving is fine if you have plenty of time for walking on stilts at the edge of your mind" it works if yur minds are in sync mentally, communicate well "loving is good if your dick's made of wood
and the dick left inside only half understood her what makes her come and what makes her stay?" here is were his insecurities come out, not necessarily an impotent comment, but i think more of how a man can please his woman, if he understood what makes her "cum" even. what makes her stay in a relationship "what makes the animal run, run away yeah what makes him stall, what makes him stand and what shakes the elephant now" going with his human animalistic nature terms again. what makes him "run" or hold back "stall", or stay "stand" in the relationship, what shakes the elephant - always saw that as a metaphor for his dick ha "and what makes a man?
i don't know, no i don't know you any more" more of his insecurities as a man, what makes him do the things he does "why the fuck is this day taking so long" he is depressed by what has happened with the relationship "i was a lover of time and once she was mine i was a lover indeed, i was covered in weed" he used to love time with her, and now time drags without her "and I walk away cause I can
too many options may kill a man" human nature again to spread his seed, too many women to have they can kill a man "but I've fucked it up now, too many times" he has messed up many relationships "loving is good if it's not understood" dont over analyze it, just go with it "yeah, but i'm the professor and feel that I should know" a professor being one who claims publicly to be an expert, he claims to know it all about relationships and love, he feels he should know but he still does not, he questions himself, doubts too much of himself. "what makes him tick apart from him prick
and the lonelier side of the jealousy stick
i don't know" all the doubts of himself, why he gets jealous, why hes a prick, why he is lonely "hell I don't know you any more" a relationship gone, can feel like u dont know them anymore, even if it is a short time apart "i finished it off with some french wine and cheese" i think he just threw this in here to interlude into the french speaking part, the "cheesier" comments, he says in french, some cheese with that wine, what he truly thinks of her "the girl dances when she plays with me and sometimes i think i love her the silence dares not" he is silent, too scared to tell her how he feels "when we are together, put the words on our nights together." he loves being with her

Iron & Wine – Naked as We Came Lyrics 18 years ago
i actually thought of this song differently. it seems like an inner conflict, a piece of her must die. she wants to start a new begining but doesnt want all of her old self to go. that old part of her made her who she is. "She says wake up, it's no use pretending" she knows what must happen, she needs to wake up and decide to let go of that part of her. to quit pretending how u r now makes u happy. "I'll keep stealing breathing her" she will still be a part of her, still within her. the conflicting side is trying to live as long as she can. "Birds are leaving over Autumn's ending" birds fly away from the cold, a change or a new season is coming, a new begining. "One of us will die inside these arms" knowing that a part of her will die. "Eyes wide open, Naked as we came" like a baby ready for the world, everything is new and exciting, ready to learn from experience.
"One will spread our, Ashes round the yard" the new self will leave the old self behind, spread the ashes. "She says if I leave before you darling
Don't you waste me in the ground" the old self pleaing to keep them as part of her, accept where they started and who they were before. "I lay smiling like our sleeping children" she is happy now with the decision, the conflict created a new birth or begining, a new child was created inside these arms. eyes wide open ready to experience life in a new way.

Ben Harper – Roses From My Friends Lyrics 18 years ago
this is about a friendship that u give your all, u love and care about them more than they do to u. u would have given them everything, and they treat u like crap. "I could have treated you better
but you couldn't have treated me worse" and after the fact of them treating u horribly, they are the first to cry when they lose u. someone u thought u knew treats u badly. they treat u worse than a stranger would. "Sometimes I feel I know strangers
better than I know my friends" if someone hurts u with stones that can pass, but someone giving u a rose hurts even more. roses usually are given when someone is making up for a wrongdoing. the thorns hurting more than stone. "all that shall remain is a token of what we've said and done" the friendship now so different it is not repairable. it is now a friendship of the past, it will be no longer the same. "that's the sound of a heart taken
and the story of tears from a king" heart is broken by having to leaving this friendship, the tears from a king being a king defeated, now powerless. his throne taken over. "This may be the last time I see you forgive me for holding you close" its inevitable, it is a friendship he would love to hold on to, and deeply cares and loves this person but knows what is best. "but if you keep me in your heart
together we shall be eternal if you believe
we shall never part" it will always be a relationship filled with love and caring for one another. that will always go on, but the friendship can not.

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 19 years ago
one of the most original songs i have heard in a long time....the first verse starts with a red right ankle, but describes how each part makes a whole. you need every aspect, muscle, bone, sinews to make a leg. wihout one it would not function correctly. the second verse talks about a gypsy unkle, who moves from place to place without a home that you never met but was dead. but since he was related and felt a blood bond between him, he respected him and loved him. even without knowing him, his one thing he found out was his hidout in the pyranees, but since it was his unkles secret, he respected him enough to keep his wishes and not give away his secret. that in his way was their bond even without his unkle knowing. then finally, the last verse about the boys who loved you. they all loved you, but some did it differently than others. some were sweet and some were cruel. some tore your heart apart violently. it is really about bonds to me, things are bonded in different ways but it all makes a bigger whole. all unions function by little parts.

Ben Harper – Please Bleed Lyrics 19 years ago
Its about a person trying their hardest to get someone to reciprocate their love. The first verse just trying his hardest to win her heart, begging and fighting for her heart. Always fighting for her love but never gets it "like a battle, that cannot end in peace." He wants to run sometimes but never does. His love is so one sided that he wants her to bleed to know she is human with emotions. "so i know that you can feel" She has mistreated him so badly that he has become numb, cannot feel anymore. He says "turn out the lights, let me stare into your soul" the only time he can see the person for who they are, so he thinks, because he says later, "good lovers make great enemies." He got a false hope from making "love" to her. She never gave him a reason to believe in their love any other time.

Butterfly Boucher – Another White Dash Lyrics 19 years ago
Basically this is what i got out of this song, it is about leaving someplace that means a lot to you. Riding on a bus i believe. Everything you need sitting in the seat next to you- your luggage. Another white dash- road marks watching, she counts to 80 but loses count. conversations on the bus that she is not in, tree shadows make it look like an old movie, heart full of rubber bands- are caught on everything she is leaving making it hard to leave. Exciting to leave everything that means a lot to you, but in the same respect hard because it means so much. the rubber band comment ex.

Tori Amos – Baker Baker Lyrics 20 years ago
This song to me is about regret. Not regret soley because she missed out on what kind of love they could have had if she would have just opened up to him, but regret in how she was living. She wanted to be whole person and be able to show how she loved someone but she didnt know how. She was too scared to open up her heart to him so he left because she was hiding. This is a very sad song of lost love...

Tori Amos – Bells For Her Lyrics 20 years ago
I thought of this song as the tragic truth of what happens to friendships. This doesn't happen to all friends, but when friendswhips grow apart. When they do, it is very strange, because you always think how much you used to love them and care for them, how well you used to get along. When you drift apart, it gradually becomes harder and harder to see that person as you once did. Everything is so familiar about that person that you still love them, but the common ground you used to share begins to disappear. I always thought of when tori says, "can't stop what's coming, can't stop what's on its way" as you cant stop our friendship from drifting apart further and further. This conflict she talks about between them also makes it easier for them to drift apart, and once it gets too far their friendship will end... is what is on its way

Modest Mouse – The World at Large Lyrics 20 years ago
this song to me means, basically the type of life he lives. any band is constantly touring "I guess it's not surprising but it's spring and I should leave"- usually when bands start touring. they have no stablilty. he is a drifter "to a whole new town with a whole new way" and never stays anywhere long enough to enjoy it "I still haven't gotten anywhere that I want." he keeps moving on because that is what is expected of him with their success, and he can not get used to settling in one place anymore "I know that starting over is not what life's about. But my thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth."
