I think the song is about making love. I get strong "Everlong" vibes from this song. Not the music, just the imagery the lyrics evoke. He probably wrote it ambiguously enough that it can be interpreted in multiple ways, but love making seems to fit mostly, I think. |

I love Against Me! and they're one of my favorite bands and I guess I'd have to be considered "conservative" or right-wing if I had to (though I'm more or less libertarian). I know they're "liberal" but I don't really care, everyone can have their own political opinion. I don't feel bad at all for listening to AM! and Laura writes great lyrics. On the other hand, I cannot listen to Rage Against the Machine anymore (loved them in junior high/high school); their politics and lyrics are fucking horrible and sound like they were written by a child.sd |

One of my top few Larry Arms songs. Not sure exactly what it's about, but there's definitely a lot of references to his younger days, especially as a (song) writer.
I don't try and find the meaning of a song line-by-line (I think it misses the big picture TBH) but I'm not sure on this one. What's he referring to by "don't kill all the beautiful things?" Love, youth, idealism (beautiful things)? |

Anyway, I pretty much agree with what kuffs said about it being a sarcastic song. The narrator wants to conquer the world and is questioning all these other perspectives (soldier, diplomat, scientist, etc) when really the narrator's actions are just another perspective to someone else. |
