I was about 7 when I first heard this song. I only heard the chorus and it instantly touch me somewhere lol. It was fantastic. I found out it was Pearl Jam and when I recently downloaded it, I cried when I listened to it cos it still is absolutely fantastic. I love it. Pearl Jam were the band who turned me on to alternative music of any kind. Thank you guys!
ps. do you know that the name Pearl Jam came from Eddie Vedder's aunt or something. She used to make jam that would make you halucinate and she was called Pearl. The End lol :) |

I think the last line is a bit remorseful in that he's written this album full of hatred for one girl but then right at the end he's saying sorry for all the things he's said and would like to say he really likes her, but he's ran out of time and the record is over. I think this song is a lament on modern society and how it has become cold, un-feeling and sterile. The lead singer wants his life to be an experience but others are different and they don't feel the same. They feel 'numb' to life and just let it pass by without taking time to care fo themselves and others. |

I can't figure out who this song is coming from; whether the girl or him in the relationship. Or it could be both. One of them isn't ready for a serious relationship ("And by the way would it be O.K. if we went our separate ways?") And is asking if they can leave even though they don't want to. Whoever posted these lyrics has missed out a bit. Where he sings "And I will be here cos I don't mind waiting". With that line, he saying he will wait for as long as possible for the girl until she is ready for him and a relationship. Just generally a beautiful song *sigh |
