There's definitely evidence he is using or abusing drugs throughout the entire film. His apartment floor is always littered with beer cans, wine glasses, pills, and he is even smoking hash or something like that in one scene...as we know, he eventually even overdoses.

@Eleventeen333 I agree it’s about him going mad but I think he’s talking normally to the groupie because he has no idea how bad he is and is trying to be “ normal”

I forgot the best bit when he pleadingly asks “why are you running away?” He doesn’t know he’s acting crazily or scaring her and doesn’t understand what is happening
( I say this from personal experience you’ve no idea how scarey you are when your psychotic. it took a good few therapy sessions before I could see how one of my turns looked to other people)
