Cover art for Sacrifice lyrics by Elton John

At the end of the day, this is a blues song. A phenomenal blues song. Here goes: Sacrifice = Love. It’s Biblical. Falling for the temptation of cheating is easy. There’s no sacrifice involved in doing so, and no love is found doing so. Leaving after discovering an affair is also easy. Staying is hard. A true commitment is hard. “It’s no sacrifice” to leave. All it leads to is “two hearts living in two separate worlds” (this is the blues element). “Sacrifice” is just a simple word, but the act of sacrificing temptation, (and then after discovering an affair, your pride, your legitimate pain, etc.) for a greater good, if warranted, is a demonstration of true love. It’s hard to do- but nothing that is truly and deeply good comes from something that’s truly easy. This is what the protagonist in the song is singing about. He’s singing the blues…
