I think it is a kind of mix of ideas.

The Elysian fields isn't exactly heaven, it is like the greek/roman heaven, but not. If I'm not mistaken, it more heavily rewards heroism in war. which makes it perfect for the premise of this song, which is that humans are violent by nature and reject salvation from christ.

The first verse illustrates how humanity has rejected god and instead chosen sin. The second verse paints a picture of humans charging upon heaven to bring war to against god, as if we could take our salvation instead of earning it. It is a kind of lyric that highlights our stubbornness. That if we would just live good lives, we could eliminate so much pain and suffering, but humans instead tend to want to fight and resort to violence and sin.

I know it is an incredibly christian message, and that this is before Dave was oficially born again... but to me this song is obviously saying these things... I think it was a sort of precursor to Dave turning into a Bible Banger.
