The band themselves said that their song was supposed to be a sonic interpretation of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Which, if you are unsure of the film, it’s a Sci Fi movie about a man being trapped on an island with a mad scientist who makes half human beasts. With the context of the lyrics, it seems to be in the point of view of one of Dr. Moreau’s half beast creations. The lyrics describe the character as crooked and hooved. Perhaps being upright and having toes can be figurative and the beast’s way of clarifying that he’s human and just wants “a little love.”

Or, it could be from the point of view of Dr. Moreau, the evil scientist that creates the beasts themselves. The hooves could represent him being evil, and he’s mentally crooked yet physically upright. It would also make more sense as he opens with “welcome to my zoo”, as in his laboratory. Perhaps this song is Dr. Moreau speaking to the man that’s trapped on the island with him, introducing him to his beastly creations. Such as the snake-baboon, who he believes is “funky chic and smooth”, indicating he’s proud of his creation.

But, of course, songs are relative and open to interpretation.
