She was married to Don Burton at the time. Since Delores's tragic life was made open in 2013 when she divulged that she had been sexually abused by a "friend" of her family for many years when she was young, she'd written many songs about her husband Don Burton who infact, had blue eyes. In this song, she is expressing really how she'd be lost without him. She really loved him so very much. It is no secret that when she was happy with him, she credited him frequently as being her rock. She was also very in love with her God. Asking for his help to keep Donny always near her, to never lose him because she'd be utterly lost without him. Beautiful song that shows just how much she needs him. A main ingredient in the songs she's written about him. Given the horror she lived during her years of abuse and the damage done to her the years following the abuse, his presence in her life was essential and absolutely foundational to her healing and EVEN her complete happiness depended on it. He held her together. Relationship goals my friends!
Very sad that he was such a positive and driving force in her life and her prayers to hold their love together ultimately failed. It had to be hard on her. The bad man who hurt her won. And I think she knew it but for all her trying nd praying, she lost control and the hurt in her ruined the most beautiful thing in her life.
The love of the one who's always been her best friend and confidant. She found Ole, but I don't think she could ever feel the way about him that she did for Donny. At this point, she had to move on from Donny and try to make do without him. We all have experienced this loss. If not, then we surely will at some point.
RIP Delores. No more pain of this life. We'll light a candle for you Daughter of the Island, Queen of Limmerick, and of our hearts. You have all the love now that will never fail you as the love on this earth did.
