To me, the song is sung from the perspective someone who was in a drunk driving accident with their significant other:

They both end up in the hospital where they are fighting for their lives and trying to recover:

As we ask for rest, just rest" (People asking what they can do for them, but still kind of judging them for drinking and driving and doing this to themselves)
At some point the narrator passes and watches over her significant other who is on life support:
