The music was written by David Blume shortly after the assassination of JFK .
The original version ( which is quite beautiful ) was a sad, minor key jazz tune
played with only piano, drums, and standup bass . Dave came up with the title
which reflected the sadness that everyone was feeling at the time , a Turn-Down Day .
Lyricist Jerry Keller took the title , but his lyrics really did not reflect the sad event
that inspired the music . I don't think Dave was too fond of the Cyrkle's version ,
which bore little resemblance to the haunting demo he recorded .
