@Dundane You made some interesting points. I agree that this song seems to reference Afghanistan. However, the name of the song is America, so it has to be about us.
I always thought it said “Was America to blame” Not “Why is America to blame” Either way, in the 80’s we were in a cold war with USSR. Our CIA supplied AK’s, other weaponry and training to the Taliban. We did this to help them fight our biggest enemy at the time (the USSR). We used that war to finically cripple the USSR without ever having to dirty our own hands with a direct war. This inadvertently put the Taliban in power. “Who you been using?”
“Who you’re abusing” Abusing Muslims? The entire religion became the scapegoat for 9-11.
“It's the suit that you're fooling” The majority of Conservative American’s (suits) are deceived by our government and their behind the scenes involvements in international events. “They wanna see blood, They wanna see hate” If the America people hate’s Muslims or Middle Eastern People in general, we won’t question our government if they want to invade or prolong a war with a Muslim Country.
Afghanistan’s most precious natural resource is opium. “…needle in you vein.” Why are we still there? Could it be the opium? A few weeks ago any new supply was discovered. Then all of a sudden, there’s rioting over some video (Innocence of Muslims) that had been online for months? It doesn’t add up to me.
“Praying for change, to a god with no face” Change was why many people voted for Obama. Money is the true God of America, and it has no face.
“You're getting older, Full of liquor you're bloated,…But you're dying so slowly.” America is no longer a new or young nation, most of us are intoxicated or medicated in some way, most of us are fat, the American dream is slowly dying. Furthermore, Muslims are forbidden from liquor, so it has to reference us.
I’d also like to point out that nowhere in the Quran, is killing a non-Muslim considered honorable. It actually say’s if you kill one person, it’s like you killed all of humanity and if you save one human life it’s like saving all of humanity. The Quran also forbids forcing anyone to convert to Islam. Muslim’s don’t worship Mohammad, and the Quran says he’s only a messenger anyway. Both the Quran and the Bible forbid anyone from making any graven images.
