This was the first single I ever bought and it became part of the soundtrack of my childhood - a longing to 'fly away' - to run away from everything: parents, 'dead life', England, meaninglessness, rat race. I escaped a few times, before finally (in my 20s) finding incredible peace and returning to England with a calling and a purpose and a new life, which I'm still enjoying.
I've just listened to that song for the first time in 25-30 years. Wow, what sad memories, what a beautiful song, and how far I've been brought from those unhappy times. I have a new appreciation for the song, though - as a child, caught up in the words of the song, I don't think I ever realised how good it was musically!
By the way, Sheer Heart Attack was the B-side - another classic.
