Well, Monday2Monday and SmartCookie326, I don't quite agree. Rather than pictoring a transitory or periodically-repeating situation (as you suggest), IMHO the song conveys the distinct feeling of the loved one being gone for good.
Furthermore: gone in which way? Was she a lover who just left him without warning? For all the singer's grief, would he then really wish to rather have passed on on that very same day (end of 2nd stanza)? To me this sounds like the words of a survivor against his will: meaning his honey might have fallen a victim to something sudden and fatal, like an accident...
In any case, he manages to cope and repress that memory on the other days of the week, but each Monday it overwhelms him again.
