This song so simply, and yet so powerfully, the process of losing someone that is very precious to you, especially the love of your life. The words and melodies perfectly reflect the emotions you feel after having the time to "heal" from a breakup. After the sadness, anger, confusion, frustration, anxiety and other emotions pass, and time and space allows you (and them) to remember and miss the great times. Your heart sings when thinking of those moments, as, for some reason, even the most insignificant moments with that person were some of the best of your life. The thought of them settles your soul and reminds you that, while you were together, you were blessed with love, because it is so much better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. For some reason, the memories and emotions almost come back stronger than before. These thoughts come out of NOWHERE, and all the sudden you have the urge to call that person and tell them that they are on your mind, and you miss them so much. But that is a dangerous call. It is always so awkward and fragile to contact someone that you were so close with, but lost, and both of you have changed. Although in your heart you hope they are happy, even deeper down you still hope for something more. What will happen if you call? Small talk is not the reason you are calling...they will not be fooled. Will you put all of your cards on the table and risk ultimate rejection...or possible reconciliation? Will they take you back? Will they tell you they have moved on? Who knows what the future brings, and time and space are the greatest healers of all. But, if you call them, is it because you want to see how they are doing, or because you want them to know that you still want them back? It is so hard to let them go, but as cliche as it is, if you love someone, set them free, and if they return, it is yours forever. Love will not return unless you let it go, whether it be with the same person or someone else. You cannot move on until you find clarity, and understand that life will go on...it will get better, with or without them. You have to learn from your relationships, and learn from your mistakes. Forgive them, forgive yourself. Love yourself. Your time together had a purpose. Just like the 311 song "Purpose" - "I believe in your purpose baby, coming up to the surface and maybe I'll never see you again...then again, who knows..." So...make that call, take that chance...be honest with yourself, and with them. You can't know what will be, what the future brings...but you will never know if you don't try! :-)
