Basically this perfectly describes the process of going numb. "But long before having hurt, I'd send the pain below." This is the "grin and bear it" mentality as you "send the pain below." After having done this repeatedly..."much like suffocating," eventually leads to..."I can't feel my chest, drop down, because I am," until you are comfortably numb and reflect upon a time when you could feel, even if it hurt; "I liked having hurt." Their ability to so concisely express it is amazing! Great band!

@idgy That what it feels most like to me as well! The time in my life that I felt this song to my core, was while numb. I learned "be careful what you wished for", as I had once wished to not feel any more.
