I won't go into how evocative the lyrics are, all the allusions and allegory, as well as the reflection on the violence in the U.S. and the violence it was involved in (instigating) elsewhere in the world, etc., etc. I'll just say that this song is frickin' brilliant. Morrison's lyrics are evocative and Krieger's guitar riff is minimalist genius- his solo after the second chorus, leading into the spoken-word bridge, isn't bad either- and the silence at the end of the spoken-word section, just before the song resumes, is terrific, tension-building. This is one of my three or four favorite rock songs of all time.
