I agree that this song is sad, if only because it illustrates the faulty 'black or white' reasoning of people with DJ's mental illness/attitude. You see it in many of his songs: his idealistic belief in true love, as in this song, on the one hand, and his pathologically negative view of the world, as in devil town, for example, on the other.
He can't take that boring middle path where everything is 'just ok' that for most of us makes life tolerable.
Luckily for us listeners, his take on the world makes for beautiful songs.
