Are they fans of Lost? The end was so bittersweet... The characters have often held themselves responsible for things that were not their fault, and I believe Jack and Kate are sometimes described as "two ships passing in the night". The Pearl station was set up by a group of scientific researchers (The DHARMA Initiative, but this is irrelevant) to perform psycological experiments. So therfore it could have to do with the speaker feeling as though he is being manipulated. Or perhaps, in accordance with events on the mythical island which contains these stations, the hopelessness of his situation and the frustration he has to deal with because of the people he is with.
Just rambling here, I really can't say anything conclusive, I would like to hear other opinions.
