Maybe I am scared or sad, sometimes I listen to these songs, on the surface they sound sweet, but there is a double message. For example, the song "Patience", by Guns and Roses sounds so romantic, then the name of the album is "Lies". So basically its about leading a girl on..."round her up in a package of lies, send her off to a coconut island". There is that other band 30 Seconds to Mars, the name of their album "A Beautiful Lie", with that sort of romantic song "The Kill".
I sort of feel like this song is a beautiful lie. Yes you hear a relaxing loving tone. He sounds warm and happy, maybe he does feel a love for the girl, but not that much. He says, "You live too far away", his excuse for not seeing her. "Your voice rings like a bell anyway", which makes me think she is calling him on the phone and he doesn't have sufficient motivation to talk to her or visit her. If a guy likes a girl, he will fly across country to visit her. Yes, he liked her "launched a thousand ships in my heart", then he says "still it's fine from afar...". He doesn't really want to see her.
What does he have to tell her?
He has a warm sentimental memory feeling for her (if that), but he isn't that into her, that's what this song is about.
Its a chill, mellow, song about not really caring about a girl.
@heather88 Maybe it's an unrequited love thing. He's loving her from afar or he's only friends with the girl but she's oblivious to his love for her/doesn't love him back. He could be saying that he loves her anyway despite this and is fine with the way things are. It kind of reminds me of Grizzly Bear's song "Shift" in that way.
