It seems to me that this song is about the alternative music cultures that sprang up at the time Adam Ant started out in the punk scene and dabbled in the new romantics. I think he is trying to say that you don't need to follow the masses and to be an individual. Todays music is almost forced down our throats with all this reality tv talent shows, telling us what is good and bad a lot of people would not be able to find individual music if it was playing next door to them.
