Cover art for Melatonin lyrics by Silversun Pickups

A friend and I spent some time listening to Carnavas and came up with the idea that it could be a concept album (a la The Shins Wincing the Night Away). We kind of picked at straws with some ideas and there is no place that ever mentions it being a concept album. That didn't make it any less fun to invent though :P

We thought that this song was about a physically abusive relationship between 2 characters: one female and one male. Most of the album is told through the female perspective (the one abused). The dream-like sound that many of the songs on the album have gave us the impression that the whole album is a series of non-chronological dreams.

"She ran into a wall" or something like that is frequently like an excuse for why the female has marks of abuse, and as many other commenters have said, perhaps there is that level of insomnia. I like what acridine said that perhaps the melatonin is a reference to something more than just a hormone.

The female takes the medication and falls asleep because she doesn't want to deal with the person she is in a relationship with. She begins to dream where she knows "i'll see my friend soon again" or the version of the man who she fell in love with rather than what he has become (abusive).

The following songs are memories of their relationship, be they good or bad, that come to mind in the melatonin-induced sleep.

I know its a stretch, but its a fun little idea ;)
