I think the "freakeat phantom" is a metaphor for his heart. He's basically saying how he doesnt ever feel anything-he's weak-"Resting himself on his crutches" and depressed. And then all of the sudden he see's this girl and this "freakbeat phantom" namely his heart touches him (begins to beat out of character as he feels so dead inside) and he feels alive again. Like he can hold on and get through it. It becomes a shock to him "confusion cuts through the air" that he can feel this way. When the "freakbeat illuminates the night" he can enjoy himself again and he can see things more clearly. It's a song about hope.
Well thats basically my disected opinion of the song. I was listening to it on the beach and it just came to me what it's about.
