Songs can mean various, and extremely different things to individual people. In my opinion, this song is about being the nice guy, the girls friend. That always wants to be with her, but just can't. She has a new boyfriend, a real one, that he can't get out of his head. I base this on two lines that really stand out, although I could name a few more.

And

Also

He hates being the friend, but will tolerate it as long as her attention is on him. Romantic acts don't matter to him at this point, as long as noone else has her.

He's green with envy, but tough and won't let it show.
