I have an interpretation for this song. The song is about the future and the cause to destroy it (suicide)
A very angst-style song especially in the sound of it.
The first verse has to deal with the urge to destroy oneself. Living in a strange zoo - paralleling the world that is just to bizarre to cope with. Happiness is a bad son, meaning that in a couple of ways happiness can actually lead to sadness (because its fleeting or feels shallow, etc.) The forceps kitchen tools and the guillotine seem to reference slitting ones wrist in a way ~ forceps - wrist, kitchen tools & guillotine - razorblade
2nd verse-
Its seems like Gavin is singing to the audience here about what was going on the first verse. That we all do things that take away our humanity just to make ourselves happy. In all it leads to fire - or chaos, or death, etc.
Choruses: The choruses have a unique sound to it - kinda like sitting at a bar or pub and drinking a beer and toasting to the end of the world (think American Pie). It seems like - Gavin is giving us a chant - that we only can wish that tomorrow is better, and hope for the best.
Third Verse: This took me a while to grasp but I feel that all in all - you have to realize that you will die, and that (if there's an afterlife) what you did on earth- how u acted as a human will be returned to you (or your future).
Chasing Watercans - sometimes we want to put out the fires that we started.
