Amazing but super sad song! It's about when your someone gets tired of you or the situation or something. They can't even describe why, but you know as well as they do that they are bored and have let the relationship go sour in their mind... past the point of no return. "Goddam this dusty room" - Things are getting old. "this hazy afternoon" – How you feel about the relationship is getting confusing. "breathing in this silence" - it's getting obvious that things are no longer as exciting as in the beginning and there's not much left to say.

He wonders if he should wait to share experiences (maybe sex) til she comes through the door or just take care of it himself now before she comes home. Maybe that aspect of the relationship is getting boring as well, yet he “behaves” so he can share it with her.

"You'll dream about somewhere A smoke will fill the air As I lay awake and wait For you to walk out that door" ...he's restlessly waiting for her disinterest in the relationship to be overcome by temptation, and he knows she will soon leave him and he will watch as she goes elsewhere for excitement.

Then, he talks about the conflict between how she wants him to constantly change and keep things exciting. Routines get boring. However, she also wants him to never change, always be there for her, and be a source of stability. Both cannot be accomplished simultaneously and neither alone will satisfy. This is torture for a guy who truly cares about a girl.

I am HOPING that the rest of you are right about the remaining lyrics being about hope. Or maybe it’s just a reminder that this is not that big of a deal. Loneliness tells you to feel bad, but then you remember that it’s not something to worry about because it happens all the time and everybody’s been there. Your existence does not depend on that of others, and it’s not the worst thing in the world to lose someone.

Well, the beauty of poetry and its various interpretations. I find the meaning as a mix of the posts I have seen.

My take on it is that he is talking about a relationship where the singer is still sharing the same dwelling with his ex-partner, while the partner is living her own life, knowing that she will leave (As I lay awake and wait for you to walk out that door) and do her thing, but will return (And wait for you to come through the door).

Loneliness is the third party involved because when the partner isn't...
