They can't even describe why, but you know as well as they do that they are bored and have let the relationship go sour in their mind... past the point of no return. "Goddam this dusty room" - Things are getting old. "this hazy afternoon" – How you feel about the relationship is getting confusing. "breathing in this silence" - it's getting obvious that things are no longer as exciting as in the beginning and there's not much left to say.
He wonders if he should wait to share experiences (maybe sex) til she comes through the door or just take care of it himself now before she comes home. Maybe that aspect of the relationship is getting boring as well, yet he “behaves” so he can share it with her.

Loneliness tells you to feel bad, but then you remember that it’s not something to worry about because it happens all the time and everybody’s been there. Your existence does not depend on that of others, and it’s not the worst thing in the world to lose someone.
