Corey's voice has a much greater range. he can actually sing, he can scream better, and he has a better way with expressing emotion in his songs, but that doesn't change the fact that the MFKR version is the original, and the original is always the more meaningful. I don't know what this song means to Corey, but as the website http://www.mfkr1.com will tell you, the song is about the escape to Umbra. It's not about drugs, and it's an indirect way of expressing the feeling of escaping reality into your own world. We all have our own words we escape to. It's human nature. Without those worlds, we would be lost.
In my opinion, as far as the actual music is concerned, the original is much better. The guitar has more melody, and the lead in harmonic from song 1 (Slipknot) adds to the spirit of the song. although the song has the addition of full-force synth in the Iowa version, the original was much better in composition.
When a band switches members, despite if the new members are better or worse at what they do, the spirit of the band changes. It's inevitable. Even if they can play the old songs the same exact way the old member did, there is no way they could write with the same creativity. And unless the member that is removed or decides to leave is a complete ass the the rest of the band or to his/her fans, the fan-base feels they have lost something when a member is gone. If fame had come to Slipknot before they reformed the band, they may not be nearly as huge as they are today. In my opinion, switching members after MFKR was the best thing they could have done, but there is no way they can replace the spirit of Gently, no matter how many times they remake it.
