It sounds to me like this song's main message is, "life sucks but you have to find the good in the bad."
She is making a birthday cake for her son, but she is putting in old moldy milk because she doesn't have anything newer, but mixed in with that there are also berries. She throws in the extra (but cheap) ingrediants that she can to try and make it better. I'm a little unsure about the msg: in small amounts it can make food taste better, but she is putting in extra. Also, some people can have bad reactions to it.
She is also talking about war, which is considered bad by pretty much all cultures, but she goes on to say "can't we just say c'est la vie," which basically means "such is life," which further concretes the message that you just have to deal with things. She knows this: she's going to show her love with this cake, even though it isn't perfect.
I was thinking of other ways this could be interpreted, too -- perhaps in a more literal way -- but this is the one I'm throwing out there.
