What I got from hearing this is that “fight or flight” mental reaction to stress when your nerves stand on end and your sense are heightened to become more fully aware of the situation dishing out the pressure, which is accompanied by a sense of danger.
When he said “they're in the business of inventing saviors” I thought he was still referring to the neurons, which could be offering a false sense of security, something that is necessary to go about our daily lives, even though there is “always trouble”, we can’t worry about it all the time or else every minute we’d be checking the gas on the stove and calling a loved one on a trip or something, giving us no time for healthy relaxation.
Trusting the things that deeper comfort brings to me refers to faith, that everything will work out okay in the end, that everything happens for a reason so we all learn the lessons we need to learn and things change on purpose as if part of a master plan we didn't even know about.
I can see how it could be about drugs and booze as well because they induce the state that crazy people and children can evoke as second nature, a state where they mentally leave reality behind for a strange world of curious excitement and comfort in limitless possibilities, basically, a place of no responsibilities or obligations, thus, no worries.
