my outlook on this song is slightly different. I beleive this song is about embracing yourself. i think alanis is telling her father to have unconditional love for her so she can become who she really is. i think all the "please be's" has to do with who she really wants to be. she refers to "papa" quite often i think this is referring to her relationship with her father and she wants him to listen to her and love her for who she is. I love this song. feel free to correct me if anybody feels this is not a proper interpretaion.
