The first verse is referring to having an unfounded belief or blind faith in something (built a castle upon believing before i doubt) and then realizing that it was a false belief and feeling let down. I think the part about the snow on the ground is rejecting the reality of the world for some religious belief of salvation or deliverance and then suffereing the consequences of an ignored reality.
