Cover art for Sacrifice lyrics by Elton John

I think this song is about being tempted to have an affair - 'when the scent of her lingers and temptation's strong' and 'into the boundary of each married man sweet deceit comes calling.' The sacrifice is the affair and what could have happened. I think he is saying that it really isn't a sacrifice because it would be very damaging and it is better left- 'some thing looking better just passing through.' In reality to forego the affair is no sacrifice because they are two people (two hearts) living in seperate worlds, like many other people.

@aleosa You nailed I believe. That's the way I interpreted it as well.

I agree with your explanation, but I understood it as if 'sacrifice' would be to stay with the person he's married to - thats why he says it's not sacrifice at all - to stay with her and not to go to temptation. but yeah.. it could also be sacrifice is their nonexisting love for each other, and that's why its not a sacrifice it's two hearts living in two separate world could refer to emotional distance between him and his partner or it could refer that he'll never be with his temptation
