Cover art for Frozen Charlotte lyrics by Natalie Merchant

Some old porcelain dolls were called “Frozen Charlotte” dolls because they were stiff and not bendable at the joints. One thought was that this song was about abuse. “Blue…Black…Still…Silent” So she left, maybe died, or just left the relationship. But even though she left ugly, she was beautiful once and will be again and wants to be remembered that way. (“Late blooming flowers lie frozen underneath the stars… Spring keeps her promises/No cold can keep her back”)

I don’t know, maybe it’s just my dour take on the song. :)
