Do you believe in the darkness below
Well I can summon them up
If you really want to know
As I tow the line

Between bad and evil
Nothing can touch me now
True believer

Born in sin where I pledge my evil oath
Violence is golden now
Did you really want to go
As I draw the line

Between bad and evil
Nothing can touch me now
True believer

True believer...
nothing can stop me now
and nothing can touch me now
True believer...

No use in praying forever shall I roam
Smoke dusted angels now
It's the only way I know
As I cross the line

Between bad and evil
Nothing can touch me now
True believer

Ash to ashes, Dust to dust
All I ever wanted was power of the blood

Pause, Now look what I have done
What I have become
I'm the chosen one

Never gonna take me
Never gonna change me
Never gonna escape me now...

Do you believe there is evil in my soul
One final high is the way
That I really want to go
As I cross the line

Between bad and evil
Nothing can touch me now
True believer

Before I actually read the lyrics I thought that the "true believer" were christians who think that their beliefs will protect them from evil. Clearly though it is not. It seems to be a demon, risen from hell, and unstopable by god.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
