Poems, Prayers, And Promises Lyrics
Days they pass so quickly now, the nights are seldom long
all the things I've done and how it's been,
time around me whispers when it's cold.
The changes somehow frightens me, still I have to smile
it turns me on to think of growing old.
It's tho' my life's been good to me there's still so much to do
so many things my mind has never known
I'd like to raise a fam'ly I'd like to sail away
dance across the mountains on the moon.
it's really fine to have a chance to hang around.
and lie there by the fire and watch the evening tire,
while all my friends and my old lady sit and pass a pipe around
and talk of poems and prayers and promises
and things that we believe in, how sweet it is to love someone,
how right it is to care, how long it's been since yesterday
what about tomorrow and what about our dreams
and all the memories we share,

This song is INCREDIBLE! It talks about growing older, and even though I'm not "old", I feel like I'm old enough to see where he's coming from. As you get older, time seems to pass quickly, and you rarely feel time dragging on. In every stage of life, I think the changes can be frightening, yet there is something intriguing and exciting about the future, whatever it brings. The chorus about lying by the fire means a lot to me, because I feel like there are times in your life when you realize how amazing tiny, meaningless moments (like laying around, talking to your friends) are truly something to cherish. Even though your friendships may be mostly based on the past ("how long it's ben since yesterday"), you still have the potential to share your hopes and dreams with them in those perfect, yet ordinary, moments.

I saw the john denver biopic one night, the part about the girl hearing this song, i listened to the song 50 times between then and getting to work at 9am the next morning, i needed something too. John denver was a really special artist.

Just discovered this song today. I'm ten years apart to read these comments :) such is that of a time traveler. Don't get such songs nowadays.

One question - does 'my old lady' refer to a mother or wife?

@wdom - I created an account to answer you. He means his ex-lover. He lost her or he broke her heart. He is dreaming a life with her being in. He is regretful and wishing a life with her being in.
