The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Let the killers go, don't let your mother know
Don't go out tonight, don't even try to fight
'Cause I can see, I've got the thing you need
And I'm here to stay, it's gonna be that way
Oh, don't try to run, don't try to scream
Believe me, the hammer's gonna smash your dream
I'm in your life, just might be in your wife
Could be behind your back, I might be on your track
And it might be true, I might be onto you
I'll scare you half to death, I'll take away your breath
Oh, don't try to see, don't you try to hide
Believe me, the hammer's gonna make you die
Ain't that right?
There ain't no way, you'll see another day
I'm shooting out your lights, bring you eternal night
And your eternal tricks, begin to make me sick
The only thing I know, is that you've gotta go
Oh, don't you try it, babe, don't look around
Believe me, the hammer's gonna bring you down
Believe me, the hammer's coming down
Don't go out tonight, don't even try to fight

"don't let your mother know"
such lyrics deserve to be interpreted, pls guys....
This song is just bad-ass! Great song. About being tough and kickin' ass I reckon.
It's about a stalked/serial killer. But it's more of a fun song than a serious song.
Probably about some killer that uses a hammer, but yeah, classic Motorhead badassery.
HEROIN ! ! ! Its about how HEROIN will absoloutly FUCK you're life in any which way possible and then probably KILL YOU.
Its about drugs - heroin addiction aka Hammer. Lemmy is very anti heroin. Once its got you in its grip its gonna take you down, fuck up your life and theres nothing u can do about it. Metallica has even pinched the line "smash your dream" for Master of puppets, which is also about drugs.
don't let your mother know - all junkies try to hide it at first, too ashamed to have their mother find out.
