In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough
And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you
'Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
But now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
La-da-da-da-da-da-da
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
You went and saved the best for last
Yeah, yeah
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough
And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
All of the nights you came to me

I wondered what was wrong with you
'Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
I think the lyrics talk about a situation where the woman (the singer) being in love with a man. The man, in the meantime, sees the woman as a close friend. Meanwhile, he goes out seeing various other women, finding that their relationships don't work out, and that the other women he sees don't really make him happy. Instead, he comes to the woman (the singer) to talk about his feelings, about how all the other women he sees don't really do it for him. Finally, he realizes that he's been looking in the wrong place and that the singer is the best match for him.
I'm going to have to agree with Dinger on this one. My best friend is a girl, and just very recently I've realized that I want the two of us to be just more than friends. The only problem is that she is already in a relationship :(
if you've made it here, then you're done.... and you know just how much i care for you
The lyrics are so horrible, but being the person who has been waiting for that person to notice you would be horrible. It sounds like her interpretation is that he "saved the best for last", but maybe he just wants someone comfortable and she is available. A set-up for a broken heart if ever there was one.
This is one of the most beautiful love songs. Alexandra B on "American Idol" performed this beautifully.. I look at this song in a whole new perspective now.
Yeah, this song is beautiful!
The sound is pretty, but the lyrics are pretty horrible in my very humble opinion. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't stand them!
i was in the exact same situation.. i really liked a guy and we were friends, so that's what he saw me as. it hurt to be like that, and whenever i heard this song it would always make me hope that one day things would change for me like they did in the song.. and believe it or not they did. after me liking him for a year and a half, something finally just changed and now we've been dating for over a year and are very much in love.. i love this song =)
I put a good friend of mine through this situation explained in the song. I love this song, but it makes me feel bad every time i hear it.
Ironically and eeriely, that's how it was between my ex and I. We were friends at first (or barely, seeing as I got mad at him for failing to see me standing in front of him) and he had dated a lot of women-each one failing him one way or another. I was always popping up though, just being friendly...eventually, he finally asked me out and it was great-exactly like the song.
Except, now we're broken off, so yeah...Whatever, maybe he'll find another person to 'save the best for last'.
