Soft Rains Of April Lyrics

The soft rains of April are over
The soft rains of April are over, over

Anybody home now
I am on the phone now, please
The soft rains of April are over
The ferry across the water to Dover
Over

Anybody home now
I am on the phone, and I'd like to come back
Is it raining back home
I'm so alone

Just got up today
And my thoughts are miles away
With you

Well, they gave me four years
Three more to go
Keep writing letters
Time's passing so slow

The soft rains of April are over
The soft rains of April are over
Over

Beautiful Song. Just Imagine being in the shoes of the main character. The music in the middle of the song is just perfect for the dark mood

I figured it was a guy who is in jail, calling home-- what with the part about being given 4 years and having 3 more to go. I love this song!

I agree... the line "The ferry across the water to Dover" too

there's an old fortress in Dover that was converted to a prison in the 50's

Not Valid

A common theme on Scoundrel Days is the band writing about leaving loved ones when they left for England to progress the band. I think Pal had a girlfriend back in Norway and many of the songs are about leaving her. This is basically about phoning home, getting no answer and being homesick.

@Han_Solo Actually it was Magne who had a girlfriend back in Norway. I immediately got the thought that this is Magnes lyrics, and he is credited for the song, too. I don't know, but maybe he wrote the lyrics?

@Han_Solo it was Mags and his girlfriend was in France, so he would write her 4 times a day

I have loved this album since 1987 (Yes I know it came out earlier than 1987 but I didn't like it at first)

This song in particular. As another person mentioned, the middle of this song is hauntingly wonderful.

Thinking about how English isnt their first language, its a touch of genius how he sings "Welllll, they gave me 4 years" as opposed to "They gave me 4 years"

Also I always thought it was "Time pardons so slow" but I'm not insisting. It certainly sounds like there is a D in there. It's not a language thing or speech thing as he pronounces S properly through the rest of the songs.

Hence why I thought he said "pardons*

Regardless, it's a wonderfully sad song.

I have been introduced to this song rather lately while listening to all of their albums.

It is kinda funny that the song sounds with a almost rock-like solo which transitions into the soft main sound throughout the song.

The moment Morten lifts his voice at "Well, they gave me 4 years" came so surprising that I immediately got goosebumps. He really knows how to sing, and how to do it well.
