Today, I feel like pleasing you
More than before
Today, I know what I want to do
But I don't know what for
To be living for you
Is all I want to do
To be loving you
It'll all be there
When my dreams come true

Today, you'll make me say
That I somehow have changed
Today, you'll look into my eyes
I'm just not the same
To be any more than all I am
Would be a lie
I'm so full of love
I could burst apart
And start to cry

Today, everything you want
I swear it will all come true
Today, I realize how much
I'm in love with you
With you standing here
I could tell the world
What it means to love
To go on from here
I can't use words
They don't say enough

Please, please listen to me
It's taken so long to come true
It's all for you, all for you

My OpinionThis song is too beautiful. The eerie, serpentine electric guitar riff over humble and honest fingerpicking creates a darkly intimate atmosphere, the tambourine adds a wild pulse or heartbeat, and the vocals of both Marty Balin and also Grace Slick on backup are yearning and ethereal. The lyrics are so passionate, especially "I'm so full of love, I could burst apart and start to cry" and "To go on from here I can't use words, they don't say enough" on through to the end, which just explodes in feeling. This song just leaves me speechless.

MemorySurrealistic Pillow came out right when I was falling in love for the first time. It was deep, powerful and it was ultimately unrequited. I played this song "Today" over and over letting the tears flow. I still remember it fondly as one of the favorties of my youth all these decades later.
And the following song "Coming Back to Me" was a perfect companion song. In fact if you listen to all the songs on that side of the album in sequence, it describes the beginnings, blossoming, full flower and bittersweet ending of a love relationship. The wistful longing and dreamlike quality of "Coming Back to Me" was soothing in a way. The Aiplane was my favorite group at that point and I'll always love them.

General CommentIt reminds me.. of one of those sleepless nights, you spend thinking about a person, fantasizing about what you'll say and do when you finally get to see them after dawn has broken. Almost like an epiphany... the realization of true, passionate love that words can't even begin to express.

General CommentPeople normally come here to look for meaning of songs. But I don’t think loads of people give a dam about this old rock and roll track forgotten with time it seems. It saddens me to see no one has pasted comments on such a beautiful song.
Now this is what it means to me.
This guy who has written it is in love with someone he can’t really somehow go out with. And he wishes that today would be the day that he can shout it out let her know how much he cares for and what he can do for her to start with.
The nice part is the irony in it. He says it as if it’s today that he has realized how much he gives a fuck….
But actually he is wishing that today be the day that she sees how he feels about her in his eyes. He wishes there is a mutual understanding between them without the need of words. And ones that she understands it he shows her the other dimensions of him self and do all he can for her.

General Commenti wouldn't say this song is romantic. well... yes i suppose it is but it is more about a desperate man who can't stop thinking about this girl but he doesn't know how to get the message across. he doesn't want to say it to her because he thinks he'll screw it up and alienate himself and then he'll never have a chance.

but i think this song is about that one day when he finally decides to tell her because he's grown tried of waiting around for the right moment.

it's a song about desperation after months/years of self-denial and/or trying to force your feelings for someone to the back of your mind because you think that being THAT open with someone for the first time in your life could be just to painful to bear if you're rejected. but you've run out of time to wait for the right moment cause she's leaving or something so this is your last chance, do or die.

as you can probably tell this comes from presonal experience. it is hard.

    nice tune too
