You tell mum, I'll break your neck,
she's already a nervous wreck,
I don't do it every day,
It doesn't hurt me anyway,
Why are you so mean to me?
you'll regret eventually,
you watch way too much TV,
I remember my first time,
I knew I had to cross the line,
I went home I cried alot,
I didn't think that I'd get caught,
I'll never be like you,
No matter what you do.

This is a Vitreous Humor song and in the original version the "I'll never be like you, No matter what you do. " isnt part of the orignial lyrics. I always thought this song was about smoking pot, but really it can apply to anything along the lines of being a teen and doing thigns your not supposed to

this song is about a young kid who keeps hearing/seeing his mom being abused by his father hence the lines: "You tell mum, I'll break your neck, she's already a nervous wreck"

the last part is about how the kid tells himself that he'll never abuse his wife like his dad does.

I agree with lazarzmongo2. But I don't get "I remember my first time/ I knew I had to cross the line" Like, is he saying that he had to tell someone? First time?

This song can have many different meanings

"You tell mum, I'll break your neck, she's already a nervous wreck,"

Could be a father or sibling that is doing something wrong either to himself or others, and that the mother doesn't need to know about it, because she's already stressed as it is.

"I don't do it every day, It doesn't hurt me anyway,"

Could mean that the person smokes weed, drinks, etc.

"you watch way too much TV" Could mean that television has influenced this person.

"I remember my first time, I knew I had to cross the line,"

Could mean the first bad thing that happened to him/her made them tell someone about it.

"I'll never be like you, No matter what you do."

Obviously means they will never consider this other person as a role model

    etc.

I think that AngéliqueArnauld is right about drugs/sex or reckless behavior.

"You tell mum, I'll break your neck, she's already a nervous wreck,"

That a sibling found him doing something bad and he is warning them not to tell. The mother is stressed about the family.

"I don't do it every day, It doesn't hurt me anyway,"

doing drugs. Telling the sibling not to worry about him.

"Why are you so mean to me? you'll regret eventually,"

not quite sure, i think its the sibling is saying that they will tell, he is saying that the sibling is being mean and will regret it. "you watch way too much TV"

he is saying that TV makes it seem worse than it actually is

"I remember my first time, I knew I had to cross the line, I went home I cried alot, I didn't think that I'd get caught,"

explaining what happened during his first time doing it. After he did it he regretted what he did. Kept doing it because he didn't think he would get caught.

"I'll never be like you, No matter what you do."

the sibling is telling that he will never be like the guy.

This was exactly the situation with my brother a few years ago...he started doing things that we looked down on him for. He became the black sheep of the family and, of course, his own selfish point of view was that everybody was just "being mean to him"

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
