The Lines You Amend Lyrics
I remember finding shoes near the lake under a tree
And I'm sittin' on the shore
I thought I saw your charm float by
It doesn't matter now
'cause all you wanted to do was die
I never would have made a sound
But now you're on the ocean floor
And I've opened a brand new door
Brand new door
Trying to find something else
While I'm skipping stones
And I'm listening to the shells
And I won't forget you
If someone else comes along
But I would not dare to quote
My friends, the lines you amend
Like, "What's so bad about dying anyway?"
Trying to find something else
While I'm skipping stones
And I'm listening to the shells
And I won't forget you
If someone else comes along
You'll always come to mind
Whenever I hear that song
Sung by Ringo Starr
Especially in the chorus part
You always said, "Now, don't you start."
Don't you start
Don't you start

I always kinda assumed this was about suicide...was I taking the lyrics to literally?
-I found the words you wrote But I would not dare to quote My friends, the lines you amend Like, "What's so bad about dying anyway?"-
I thought he found her suicide note, but couldn't bring to share it with thier friends/family because it was so bleak and sometime it is better not to know the truth?

I found the words you wrote But I would not dare to quote My friends, the lines you amend Like, "What's so bad about dying anyway?"
-ok those lines right there, just the way Chris Murphy sings it, is one of the best things in music history. I just find it so beautiful, it sometimes gets me emotional. That's what music is about, and Sloan nails it.

ithink this is a great summer song where i guy is tlak about a girl he loved and his frineds and what happend to there lives and how he hope ever thing would end peacefully

What about all the references to drowning?:
Said you'd found a way to end it peacefully I remember finding shoes near the lake under a tree
all you wanted to do was die
now you're on the ocean floor
Swimming out to sea Trying to find something else
I found the words you wrote Like, "What's so bad about dying anyway?"
I'm listening to the shells And I won't forget you

I believe the quotes are from "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath...A book that ends with the protagonist's suicide. At one point, she states that drowning is the kindest way to die.

The song is written and sung by Jay, not Chris. I love Chris too, but credit where credit is due. There's a vid on YT of just Jay and Chris performing this song at a radio station promo. Not the greatest version, but this song lives on forever for anyone who listens closely to it. It's really beautiful, and so distinctly human how a song can bring back the closest remembrance of someone who has gone on. Sloan. Live on, indeed.
doorknobten... pinklemonade is right that Chris sings that verse. Jay wrote the song, yes, but Chris leads in that little part.
