General Commentyou also have to remember that the album "tonight's the night" was a rather drunken, beautiful mess of a tribute to recently (at the time) deceased friends, (guitarist Danny Whitten and CSNY roadie Bruce Barry). i can see how this song would relate to that, as in young has money and fame ("the world on a string") but it "doesn't mean a thing" because he has lost his friends.

General Commenti really think this is the best song on TTN
mainly because it seems to break away from the themes of catharsis and grief.
it has it's own philosophy. to me as profound as any.
it's only real in the way that i feel from day to day.
to put a realistic sentiment that simply is beautiful to me.

General CommentI think that this song tries to say that nothing matters except for the way that you feel about yourself. Even if you had the world on a string, it doesn't even matter unless you are happy on the inside. It doesn't mean a thing unless that special person that you want to be yours doesn't really want to be yours. This is what I find to be wrong with myself. I can be so unhappy even though I have every advantage in the world on my side. Something so miniscule as a meaningless girl in my life can make me so unhappy.
