"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I could tell the meaning of a word like serene
I got some 'O' Grades when I was sixteen
I can tell the difference between margarine and butter
I can say "Saskatchewan" without starting to stutter
But I can't understand why we let someone else rule our land
We're Cap in Hand
I could get a broken jaw from being in a fight
I know its evening when day turns to night
I can understand why Stranraer lie so lowly
They could save a lot of points by signing Hibs Goalie
But I can't understand why we let someone else rule our land
We're Cap in Hand
We fight, when they ask us
We boast, then we cower
We beg
For a piece of
What's already ours
Once I thought I could make God a bribe
So I said I was in his lost tribe
Getting handouts can be so frustrating
"Get in line son, there's five million waiting"
I can't understand why you let someone else rule your land
You're Cap In Hand.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I Can't Go To Sleep

Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
yes this song is brilliant pretty much just says fuck the englsh and get off our land i am scottish and i feel that way
no it doesnt, this song was actually written in direct response to hibernian selling andy goram "the goalie" to glasgow rangers
It certainly wasn't about Hibs selling Andy Goram to Rangers. Cap in Hand was on the Sunshine on Leith album which was out in 1988. The Goalie didn't sign for Rangers until 1991.
@enemaofthestat3 not being funny or racist, but before you come with all your sh*t, take a look back in history, who came cap in hand to who begging to be saved, i rest my case
Got to love a song thats telling people to get off your butt and stick up for your "country" in this case being Scottland.

My favorite proclaimers song.
SCOTLAND!!
(I'm American but I'm obsessed with Scotland. I would so much rather visit Glasgow or Edinburgh than England!)
YES! Scotland is brilliant! Edinburgh is very tourist-y, which you might want, I don't know. But if you ever visit Scotland, come to Glasgow. That's where you'll find the true meaning of Scotland. Stirling is also great, and cleaner. Then take a trip up to Loch Lomond. It's close to Glasgow (about 20 minutes by car) and very beautiful. One thing's for sure, if you visit Scotland, you won't find nicer people anywhere. Just be careful in Glasgow at night. Just some friendly advice if you ever decide to visit.
@NineMuses and i have to say as an Englishman i agree, id much rather you visited scotland too, dumb yank

We are all CAP IN HAND when it comes to living in our own countries.
This song is AMAZING! Scots didn't really fight for their country. They just let England walk in and take over. If I was Scottish, I'd be really upset.
Getting handouts can be so frustrating "Get in line son, there's five million waiting"
(my FAVOURITE lines from this song)
OK. I agree the song is amazing. However I strongly disagree that we just the the English walk in and take over". There were many battles fought, won, and lost before the English conquered. And that was even before the rebellions. Furthermore, most of this took place in the 14th century. Most Scottish people have gotten over it by now. This song isn't about the English conquering us, it's about Scottish Independence, which is a long debated topic. I'm not going to go into the details of that here, but i's easily researched. Scots are strong and resilient to his day, and very patriotic. Always have been. There is no way Scots past or present, would go down without a fight.
