How Near How Far Lyrics
Through verses set in nursery rhyme
At oil painted eyes
Of muses left behind
I swear I know not why
Those eyes have always left me dry
She stands with arms stretched out
Towards the mountains & the clouds
Oil painted eyes
Blind yet hypnotized
I swear I know not why
Those eyes have always left me dry
Every contour of a muse's eye
Painted in my eyes mind
On canvases of time
I swear I know not why
Those eyes have always left me dry

I believe this song is about the conditioned state of mind that most of us are brought up into and how it has really left us blind from true intelligence. We believe the answers or truth is engraved in history, stories, laws, and pictures, but if you begin to question the paths mankind has taken up to this point, it may not make sense. The answers are always there but yet we fail to achieve the silence beneath it all, and the love we need, to acknowledge the significance of merely being. When he says “my eyes mind” it may have to do with the existence his mind or ego in particular has created, which is based around thought and the illusion of time. We are struggling to find ourselves and even further, most of us are failing to try. As we continue to strive for the exact answers about how life should be lived, we are driving ourselves farther from the single flow of existence.
Anyway, opinions really aren’t that important… This song, I’m sure; can have a different effect and meaning to each and every one of us.

verses said in nursery rhymes... hmmm I think we're on to something.. I mean ring around the rosies was all about the black plague. And nearly every kid's song like that is just used as some subtle pavlovian vehicle to whip our super-absorbant adolescent minds into an agenda for our outlooks later in life. I don't think this song is about a past relationship.. I suppose not a romantic one. I think it's definitely about childhood. And in the linear sense of our past, it's quite far away. However, we carry the past in our minds...how near, how far... But the memories of the past get lost just like car keys.

I just got the Source Tags & Codes album and it's gr8 4 just relaxing 2...This song stood out 4 me tho, it's really mellow and i just love the drumming!

they are so amzing! i really love these guys!!!!

Tell me how close I am, I think it's about reflecting on the past and on someone you loved from afar. But no matter how much you loved there were just out of your reach, how near how far.

Hey Torontokid, I got chills when I read your post. I always new thats what it meant subconciously, but didn't realize it until you wrote it. Nice.

trail of dead fucking rock. they are one of the best bands around. I saw them at Leeds festival and they were amazzzzzing!
I'm not totally sure what this songs about... it seems that he's longing for someone or something.

yea, i agree with torontokid. i think conrad is kinda looking at how his past relationship with someone was and how lost it is.

this song is too beautiful to be anything but a love song...haha i keep telling myself that.

I think its an atheist song, follow my thoughts: the woman thei refer to, is probably an image of a "saint"; he says that she always left him dry(disturb him); the chorus is the main part to understand my theory: when he say "how near", he's refering to the people that believe that are next to god;when he say 'how far", he's saying that doesn't exist, that they are only near to him, in their minds
pretty good theory, isn't it?
