"All My Love" as written by John Paul Jones and Robert Plant...
Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light
To chase a feather in the wind
Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight
There moves a thread that has no end

For many hours and days that pass ever soon
The tides have caused the flame to dim
At last the arm is straight, the hand to the loom
Is this to end or just begin?

All of my love, all of my love
All of my love to you, oh

All of my love, all of my love, oh
All of my love to you

The cup is raised, the toast is made yet again
One voice is clear above the din
Proud Arianne one word, my will to sustain
For me, the cloth once more to spin, oh

All of my love, all of my love, oh
All of my love to you

All of my love, all of my love, yes
All of my love to you

Yours is the cloth, mine is the hand that sews time
His is the force that lies within
Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find
He is a feather in the wind, oh

All of my love, all of my love, oh
All of my love to you

All of my love, ooh yes, all of my love to you now
All of my love, all of my love
All of my love, love, sometimes, sometimes

Sometimes, sometimes, oh love
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Ooh yeah, it's all my love

All of my love, all of my love, to you now

All of my love, all of my love
all of my love to, to you, you, you, yeah
I get a little bit lonely

    General CommentFirst four lines:
He is grieving his sons death, he wants to forget, but can't at the same time. His son is perhaps the feather in the wind: a memory that seems close, he chases his spirit, but he knows he is dead. Over time, the thread will weave and patch the anguish. The thread represents time itself (this is evident in the last paragraph/stanza). The glow is his undying, but perhaps faltering spirit and love. A fire in light appears weaker.

    Second four lines:
Time has passed, he is tired and worn. He again questions his love. His arm is straight and ready to weave. Is he really ready to move on?

Chorus: he is crying out to give his love to his son and/or wife...

    The cup is raised part:
Others give him will to sustain (His wife as somebody else suggested), the healing has begun.

    Final lines:
His wife provides the cloth that he will repair, then they can be whole again. His son is the driving force that lies within. Together, son, father and mother, must find and use all of their warmth and love (fire) as one cannot live in pain forever. His son is a feather in the wind, a distant memory...

This song could mean anything to anybody, it could be about the loss of a partner or whatever is special to you, make of what I said as you will. Please reply, I want to hear what other people think, I created an account just for this song and this is my first post.

General CommentOk ya bite me people post pointless comments. But so far on this song only one person has actually posted about the song and you decided to critisice his grammer? and then say people shouldent post pointless comments? anyhow this is a great song a true zeppelin classic, simply a testimony to their myriad of differint sounds and styles.

General CommentThis is such a sad song. Robert Plant's 5 year old son, Karac, died because of a stomach virus, and he wrote this song because of that.

General CommentOr another possibility; I just remembered that Robert Plants wife, Maureen, was an immigrant from India. Karac would have had an "Aryan" heritage through her.

My Interpretationfighter, big mike, ya'll make some interesting points. This song speaks to me more through permanent, even platonic love, rather then death or plants son but i'd like to comment on both. Feather in the wind seems to be about an affair, the cloak of delight seems to relate more to the cloth in the last verse as an ongoing narrative of ones life or two peoples union. I agree with how fighter used chasing his spirit and the patching of the cloak or cloth to be a symbol of him moving on or accepting the death but it could also relate to a promise about to be fulfilled. His proud one word to sustain sounds like a vow, hand to the loom is kinda like tying words to actions, at some point this signifies tying the knot. The tides also struck me as being some sort of uncontrolled emotion. The decemberists used "wanting, comes in waves" so tides seem pretty similar. As to loss or death, it's like how tears may crash out of you in waves but it takes time for them to swell up again, like a tide. I believe the force that lies within could be a force of pain caused by the son's death or, in my situation, the love i've received. Zeppelin uses "He" for the force and the feather, which kinda brings me to side note about gender, especially for the wo-men. I've always had more stuff to care about then i had force to act, in a way i was a feather blown about by others desires, course there were limits. With love, I now have one person to care for and a growing force inside me. As this love force is sometimes considered inherantly female, why is it still his? Is it because the cloth is literally a sewn-in thread whereas the needle only holds on by a string and thus has some form of control? how does this relate to time and who creates reality? If it helps, in some odd way I am frozen in time, hehe, whatever.

bigmike I agree at the start he is chasing the feather, flings or memories alike, but at the end it sounds like he is letting both pass on. I really liked stoner masculinity, lots of people hide their wadevayawanacalit behind something. Hopefully they will reconcile those feelings and won't need too many external sources of validation. Acting gay or bi is a sexual issue, being flamboyant or feminine is just a personality trait. If plant does get down i guess it's because he was a little gay all along but if doing it makes you gay then "being gay" is just a choice. You can even check out the commercial on youtube! As for you stirring up forces in people thats pretty flaming of you. Just remember at some level a bright(slow, cool, patient) fire stirs up the greatest force, those who become feathers, well i guess thats just sex appeal...given we take Plant's dead son out of the picture.
