Strange Attraction Lyrics

It started with a dedication:
"Lost in admiration - happy birthday
I'm forever yours - Blossom"
Faded red inside a tiny book of butterflies
I smiled, surprised at how, when flickered through
The wings flew by spelled out my name

Six months went by the summer lost
Obsessively the letters dropped into my life
The same soft blood, smooth flowing hand
"Please try to understand - I have to see you
Have to feel you
Tell you all the ways I need you
Yours forever in love..."

Strange attraction spreads its wings
It varies but the smallest things
You never know how anything will change
Strange attraction spreads its wings
And alters but the smallest things
You never know how anything will fade

The year grew old incessantly
She wrote to me she'd started smoking poetry!
I laughed in recognition of a favourite phrase
She'd pulled me in
I answered her
A Christmas card in sepia
Arranging when and where and how the two of us should meet

Her opening so well prepared
A nervous smile
I couldn't take my eyes from her
She whispered
"Can I use some of your lipstick?"
It was perfect, so believable
I couldn't help but feel that it was real
And kissing crimson fell into her waiting arms

Strange attraction spreads its wings
It varies but the smallest things
You never know how anything will change
Strange attraction spreads its wings
And alters but the smallest things
You never know how anything will fade

So alone
Into the cold new year without another word from her
I wrote to ask if we could maybe meet again before the spring
But weeks went by with no reply
Until once more my birthday came
And with it my surprise, but this time nothing was the same

"I'm sorry - blame infatuation - blame imagination
I was sure you'd be the one but I was wrong
It seems reality destroys our dreams
I won't forget you - Blossom"
Faded red inside a tiny book of old goodbyes

Strange attraction spreads its wings
It varies but the smallest things
You never know how anything will change
Strange attraction spreads it's wings
And alters but the smallest things
And you never know
And you never know
And you never know

Dudes, you guys really don't know what this is about? Well, King of Some Island is the closest to what it is about. They interview him about the song and it's meaning and he explained how there was this chick that was obsessed with him and woudl write letters to him and all that junk and when they met up, she realizes that he's not the person she thought he was so she just plain ignored him til she finally told him that it was just an infatuation.

But he had always been with Mary, why he would meet this girl?? :S or im too innocent? :P

Not Valid

I think the same, Robert has been always with Mary and she's a kind of treasure for him since they were just 14! It's unforgettable how Robert said: "I can't imagine grabbing hold of anyone but Mary". I don't know! Maybe I could be a bit innocent but I really trust in those words.

yeah the caps are kind of taking away from the song!! (sorry oofus!! LOL)

its a bittersweet song.. i think its about ppl who share some special or rare interests which bond them in a kind of fascinating relationship, like its all too good to be true. For that period of time they cant believe how incredable each other are alike. but then reality kicks in and one person realises how different they lives really is aside from the interests... (im speaking from personal experience here) ...and so their relationship comes to an abrupt stop.

This song has always reminded me of "Mint Car," as though that should've come first, then "Strange Attraction" on the album. It sounds like "Mint Car" was written in the rapture of the initial relationship, then "Strange Attraction" written in hindsight. You get a much more melancholy feel that way...

Robert has stated in more than one interview that this did happen. He received letters from an obsessed fan and they finally met and he wasn't how she thought he'd be. Which brings me to another point - I find it quite funny that a lot of women don't think he's ever slept with or had affairs with other women. He's away from home touring for months on end... And in this case, why would he want to meet up with someone obsessed with him? I doubt he wanted a platonic friendship out of it. Robert's even stated as far back as 1985 that his relationship with Mary is "fairly liberal."

You know, I really shouldnt have read that. I just went through basically the same thing. Of course, things were slightly different... but I can relate to this song a little to well for my own comfort.

You know, I also shouldn't have read that. Those caps drove me crazy. Easy on the caps lock, oofus. To many caps for my own comfort.

Ye GoatboyX2 Mint Car and Strange Attraction are almost the same. They are both "happy songs" and they are play the same.

Does "SHE'D STARTED SMOKING POETRY!" mean that she smoked crack/pot/hash? Cause on Pornography Rob was on lots of drugs and wrote a very good album, so maybe poetry is = drugs. Kinda can't explain it, but thats what i think :)

In some ways, it sounds like he was with a transvestite.
